Speed up Windows Mobile 5.0

This week's tip comes from Darren Humphries at Smartmobileassets.com:
Windows Mobile 5 gives us some important new features including persistent storage. When I heard that there was an upgrade for my Dell Axim x50v I was eager to upgrade, along with many others. Unfortunately, the upgrade has not been smooth for many and performance has been a real problem. But I can tell you that the performance issue is solved by doing the following:

*If you are not comfortable with editing your registry you should not do so, just get the newest version of Tweaks2k2*

Using a registry editor such as PHM RegEdit lookup and change the following three values:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\StorageManager\FATFS\Cac heSize=0x1000(4096)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\StorageManager\FATFS\Ena bleCache=0x1(1)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\StorageManager\Filters\f sreplxfilt\ReplStoreCacheSize=0x1000(4096)
  • Be sure to choose Tools>Exit in order to have the settings applied to the registry and then turn off your Windows Mobile device, don't reset yet! You have to do this because WM5 keeps some things in RAM and by cycling the power it will write to ROM.
  • Now, soft reset your device.
  • We aren't done yet, although you will probably notice a difference in performance right away.
  • Now, you need to stop Activesync from periodically starting on it's own. To do so open Activesync on your WM5 device and tap on Menu>Add Server Source. Add any info to create a fake server sync.
  • After that is complete go to Menu>Schedule and change the two dropdowns to "Manual" and tap "ok" at the top right. You can now go to Menu>Options and delete the Exchange Server setting you just added. Now Activesync will not start when you cradle your device.
  • Error Reporting is real drain on the battery and on performance. It is simple to disable, just go to Start>Settings>System(tab) and tap the Error Reporting icon. Change the setting to "Disable error reporting".
For good measure, soft reset again. Everything should be MUCH snappier!!

xaris777:

Thanks for visiting the forums! Let's just say that if you have an Axim X50v currently running Windows Mobile 2003SE, I'd probably stick with that. Windows Mobile 5.0 doesn't par too well with the Axim X50v, and I would recommend that you stay away from it for now. If you truly must have Windows Mobile 5.0 on your device, then the tips above will keep you a float and should speed up your device.

I haven't tried it on my K-JAM nor a 6700. Since you are working with the registry you are touching some dangerous stuff. You can try it although you assume all risks and your mileage may vary . Let us know if you find anything!

Probably not...but if you feel that your Eten M600 is sluggish... you can try, just make sure you back everything up before you do this and remember, its at your own risk (I can't stress that enough)!

I'm sorry to hear that you are having trouble. Can you tell me what you are doing and what happens when you soft reset your O2 XDA mini S?

hmm... you might have done something incorrect... your best bet at this point unfortunately, is to perform a hard reset. This will clear out all data and start fresh.

Good luck!

this might help. After you have turn off your device, turn it on again and perform a soft reset.

I hope this clear it up.

I found this good Tips on how to Speed up your x50v with WM5.

Axim X50 Series WM5 FULL SPEED
This list is the best after this if your X50 series With WM5 does not work 100% than through the X50 out the window okay. Talking about the best tweaks ever.

FIRST HARD RESET

1. Than Goto the Start Menu
2. Settings/Systems/ Click Error Reporting Click DISABLE
3. In the Same Settings/Systems Click Power Than Processor Tab and Click Maximum Performance

Than the following:

BLUETOOTH STACK DRIVERS

1. Widcomm 1.7.1 (Last drivers out)
2. Coexistance Hack so that Bluetooth and WIFI work together.

ACTIVESYNC HACK

1) Start up AS on your x50.
2) Tap the menu tab/soft key and tap "Add Server Source"
3) Configure a server source with a dummy IP address, user id, password and domain name; these do not have to be real
4) Once configured you should have another sync source show up on your main AS screen...continue on.
5) Tap the menu soft key again and you should see that the sync schedule option is no longer greyed out.
6) Change your schedule from a timed automatic start of AS to manual under both fields
7) If you try to sync now, AS will try to contact your imaginary exchange server and that will take forever until it times out, so you can now delete the exchange server from your list of sync sources. Your changes to the sync schedule will remain and will survive soft resets too.

REG TWEAKS

1. Get Tweaks2K2 3.21 version and install it and goto Tweaks/System Tricks/System Tricks.
2. Collection 1 - Uncheck Everything.
3. Collection 2 - Check only Show AM/PM in the clock and Wake up Power off time 60s.
4. Collection 3 - Just check Alarm Fix for WM2K3/5.
5. Collection 4 - Uncheck all
6. Collection 5 - Check only Increase the PNP Unload Delay, WM5 Optimum Cache Size and Do not delete CAD Files.
7. Than goto the Tweaks/Video and check the Speed up display.

Than click Tweaks/Exit.
And Soft Reset Okay.

a. Goto download Resco Explorer and install it with Regeditor.
b. Do the following if not changes from the Tweaks2K2.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\StorageManager\Profiles\ MSFlash\FATFS\DataCacheSize=0x1FA0(4096)

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\StorageManager\Profiles\ MSFlash\FATFS\Flags=0x28(40)

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\StorageManager\FATFS\Cac heSize=4096

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\StorageManager\FATFS\Ena bleCache=0x1(1)

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\StorageManager\Filters\f sreplxfilt\ReplStoreCacheSize=4096

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\StorageManager\Profiles\ MSFlash\FATFS\DataCacheSize=0x1FA0(4096)

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\StorageManager\Profiles\ MSFlash\FATFS\Flags=0x28(40)

HKLM\drivers\buitltin\strataFMD and delete the two CompactionCritPrio256 and CompactionPrio256.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\FileSys and change it to say \CF Card\Volatile or \SD Card\Volatile instead of \Application Data\Volatile.

Than goto \Application Data\Volatile in file explorer and delete cut the folder and copy it to the place you asigned it too. Wait 30 secs and soft restart the PPC.

Also goto the Windows/Startup folder and delete the poutlook file.

Than Goto filesys Patch v10 the best.

Than this sounds funny but go and get a game that is called The Great Gold Rush and install it and run it when you run it for the first time you will see that it asks to change something in the reg files to make it work faster well it makes the PPC faster. About 5-10% okay. (Note you can uninstall it if you like after the reg changes and soft reset okay)

NOW LAST TWEAK AND READY TO FEEL THE SPEED

Go get this SKTools

I used SKtools set for performance and the following are set

Disable windows animation
Disable menu animation
Set font cache size to 32768
TCP window size 98304
File system cache 2048

Do that with SKTools and than Soft Reset and tell me how it goes.

Here's the Link{: Speed up x50v
