Ebooks: Evolution, Not Revolution, in Book Publishing

Here's an interesting article about publishers' adoption of eBooks not as a medium to replace print but rather to enhance the offerings to the customers. And contrary to popular beliefs, eBooks are doing nicely! I know I still purchase books in print but the majority of my books are eBooks....Right now I have 1 book in print (currently reading) and 10 on my PPC (waiting to be read).
"EBOOKS WILL SOON REPLACE PRINT BOOKS," hyped a typical late 1990s news story written at the peak of the "dot com" frenzy. So-called experts made predictions such as this one: "Soon print will just be a component of publishers' Internet strategies."
When the much-hyped ebook revolution didn't materialize, many of the same pundits who earlier predicted the death of print were quick to write the obituary for ebooks. Now the marketplace is adjusting its perceptions once again. Many are realizing that digital publishing is a gradual evolution-not a revolution-in bringing books to market.
"The notion that ebooks will replace print books is ridiculous," says Ted Treanor, president of Seattle Book Company. "But frankly ebooks have been doing well for some time, it's just taken time for the market to see them in a more accurate light."
Today publishers are adding ebook editions to their print titles to give readers greater choices, and consumers are downloading digital editions at a faster clip than ever before. The industry's revenue volume is growing at a double-digit rate, according to the Open eBook Forum. In the first half of 2003, ebook sales revenues rose by 30 percent and unit sales were up by 40 percent over the same period last year. This compares to annual growth of only about 5 percent for print publishing.

Do you prefer books in print or what is your ratio of print to eBooks?
