Is it possible to install applications without using activesync. I don't use windows one bit at all (absolutely hate it) but can't seem to get synCE or whatever working in linux (b/c i'm an idiot). Does anyone know a way to convert some of the .exe files into .cab files or some way so i don't need to use "The missing sync" for OSX or use synce in linux. Thank you for your time.

I don't know of a way to convert, but have a couple of thoughts. First, do a web search for a cab version of the application you want to install. More and more developers are making cab versions available. Second, try just running the exe. Many times all it does is unzip the cab file and install it as opposed to needing any real installation routine.
There are some archives of cab install files out there. I have found Freecabs.de a very helpful site. Since cab files install to their default location in main memory, you will probably want to use an install manager like Cabinstl so you can direct installation to alternate locations (like a memory card).
What I have been doing so far is just searching the net for the .cab files and just downloading them straight to my phone. Linux is a pain in the butt sometimes but i'd much rather lose one small feature like this (instead of take the time to actually figure it out, cause i'm lazy ) then support M$ even more and use windows. I know i'm using windows 5.0 or whatever and if i had a choice i would have gotten a different phone (just one that didn't have M$ OS on it) but yeah again i'm impatient and I love my toys.
This solution should work %95 of the time. What you do is install the application. When active sync pops up and says "app will be installed on next connection" then you can do the fun part. Navigate to "C:\Program Files\Microsoft ActiveSync" and find the application folder. There should be a cab file there as well as an .ini or uninstaller. All you need to do is move the cab file to a memory card, upload it and download it to your device, or whatever you do to get files on your device. It will work as if you installed the program from activesync!
Hope this helps! It helped me ALOT when i found out!

Can you install AS in Linux? I think that is his issue, but I could be mistaken.
AFAIK, AS and Linux do not play well together even in a virtual session.
However, some .exe installers are really self-extracting compressed archives. There are times when changing the extension to .zip or .rar allows a compressed archive manager to browse the contents and extract the appropriate .cab install file. It is not a sure bet, but I have found several where this is the case.
