I have the problem with a Pocket PC 2002 device where the battery drains and the entire device resets to a state outside of the box and all my data is gone. Obviously, the only way to solve this problem is to keep the device charged at all times, which is not that easy for me.
If I install software on an SD card, does it write any registry settings to the device or can will I be able to run a program straight off the SD card after a clean reset.
I want to install GPS software and throw it in my car if I get lost and I am trying to figure out if it worth doing. I don't want to be in a spot where I can't run GPS software just because I didn't keep the device charged.
The easiest way to handle this is to set the device up as you wish and then do a full backup. This will make a copy of the RAM (including the registry). If your memory card with the GPS app is large enough, you can keep the backup file there. You can then recover back to that point by using your backup app to do a restore. This of course works best if your device includes a backup app in its OS ROM image that will reload with the rest of the basic OS.
