can anyone plssss guide or tell me is there some type of softwares that allowed mei to download n install softwares (setup .exe) directly to my pdas without activesync? i dont mean .cabs files! i would like to install all softwares, if possible, to my pdas without ever needing the activesync! thnks a millions!
If the .exe setup file is a self-extracting zip archive, you may be able to extract the .cab file by changing the .exe extension to .zip and then trying to access the content files for extraction. If it is not a compressed archive, just changing the extension will not make it viewable using archive management software. Brian is right in most cases; a desktop executable cannot be accessed on a handheld.
The original post was a question about installing files that are intended for installation over ActiveSync without using ActiveSync. Most install packages circulated in .exe form must be run from a desktop host with the app installed over the AS connection. The solution in some cases is to identify and extract the required .cab file within the installation package, but that is a questionable solution unless the install file clearly identifies itself as a compressed archive - only a few setup.exe files actually are zip archives. The bottom line: unless you can extract the appropriate .cab file, you cannot do the install without access to a host desktop PC.
As an example, Laridian releases its PocketBible app as a setup.exe file that is actually a self-extracting archive. By changing its extension from .exe to .zip, Resco File Explorer can recognize it as a .zip folder and I can extract the appropriate .cab file to my device to install it without needing a desktop PC. The setup.exe file itself would need to be run on a desktop host with the installation to my device done over an ActiveSync connection. I have done this with a number of apps to install updated versions while on the road. It does not work with all setup.exe files but with a fair percentage of them.
When doing this kind of .cab file extraction, make sure you select the file for your OS. Setup files can include .cab files for different OS versions, the install process on a host PC usually selecting the right version based on information reported by your device through the ActiveSync connection.
I definitely agree with Brian about preference for .cab installs whenever possible. The trade-off is that if you always install from the same desktop host, the info retained in the ActiveSync partnership can make reinstalls an easier process.
