The apps you mention (as well as Word, Excel, and IE) are all parts of the WM OS. But unlike desktop Windows, MS does not update WM directly to end-users. The OS image is tailored to the hardware of each device to keep the footprint as small as possible. So keep your eye on the device maker's web site for any OS updates, which will be in the form of flash updates for the device's ROM.

You can also look for apps that give better functionality than the OS-bundled versions. Many sights give you access to freeware apps. You can start on this site's section. Other good sites are pocketpcfreewares.com, freewareppc.com, and pdagold.com.

Unfortunately, too true. The OS apps do not tend to get incremental updates; they update with new OS releases. A couple of years ago MS was talking about a process where they would issue the base OS-updates directly, but that seems to have gone by the wayside. The close connections between the hardware, OS, and vendor-added apps in each device may make it too complicated to easily do.
