Has anyone tried Skype for Pocket PC?
I had used Skype for my home PC before but was amazed at how easy and convenient it was to use Skype with my new PPC. Especially being on campus (at a totally wireless covered university), I have found myself making calls from my PPC either to other PC's or with SkypeOut to make long distance calls or local calls to regular phones. 8-)
Just a quick tech note for those Toshiba e805 users with Windows Mobile 2003 SE... I have a Toshiba e805 and just upgraded to Windows Mobile 2003, Skype had been working perfectly before upgrading to SE but once I had upgraded it would cause my PPC to crash every time I pressed "Accept" on the installation licence screen. Skype has not addressed this issue with a bug fix/update yet but THERE IS A WAY AROUND THIS... Simply change the screen orientation to landscape, open Skype and press Accept, and then you can change your screen orientation back to portrait if you wish. I hope this helps someone as it took me some time to figure this out.
I have skype installed on my pocket pc. It is one of those "wow" programs that I impress my friends with when I want to show them how good the pocket ps is. Even geeks are impressed! The sound quality is not as good as a mobile phone though and delay can make conversation difficult. Also you really do need to used headphones in my experience to avoid annoying echo. It lacks some practicality. Although it is dam cool. 8-)
What I would like to see is skype with a bluetooth headset! Anyone done this on the ppc?
I have it installed. Tested it with Skype's echo test service and seemed to work well, altho' I don't know anyone else using it so I can't converse. Besides, I have a slight dislike for phones in general anyway.
I'm using it on a Dell Axim x50v, and it's kinda cool holding the unit to my head like a telephone handset (or cellphone, if you will). However, due to the microphone and speaker arrangement, the unit is actually upside-down.
I tried the Jabra BT earset, which seemed ok except I seem to get an echo (last I tried). Will have to revisit this... but I'm sure BT is doable.
It is my understanding from talking with Skype that its PPC version will not support a BT headset... there is not way to set the bluetooth device as the ear piece currently in PPC 2003
Greets all! First post on this service. When I saw the discussion around Skype for PPC I had to create an account and reply.
I've been using Skype for a few months now to talk to clients using my Dell Axim x50v and a Jabra BT200 Bluetooth Headset. Flawless. Some minor static from the BT if my Axim is on my belt, but still very usable. I quite often just leave Skype running on my Axim while it is in its cradle (so I don't drain the battery with both BT and WiFi running) and just wander around my office and work on various things while talking on the BT headset.
And as for the Geek factor, try sitting in a local Internet Cafe, riding their wireless, reading your email and having a talk to your ppc. The Looks you get!!!
If you want to test your installation, please feel free to Skype me when I'm online (usually late evenings after 9PM PST). My Skype number is njw3347072.
Cheers!
