I have tried to use the ROM update (SP27674) for the iPAQ 5500 series from the HP website. I have a 5555. I have followed all the directions and it doesn't work. I made sure my host pc's sleep/screen saver mode is off, I've performed a soft reset as instructed. When it gets to the part where it's suppose to start updating a window comes up and says "Verifying the information on your iPAQ....please wait....." and that's it. It never goes any further. I've tried it several times. Last night I let it go all night because I thought it just might take a while. When I got up this morning, that same window was still there. I don't understand. I need this update because it fixes the problem where it doesn't power off after a reminder and runs down the battery. Does anyone have any suggestions? Anything would help. Thanks!
Valerie
Valerie,
First redownload the update.
Are you absolutely sure you soft reset your Pocket PC before you tried this? If so, back up and hard reset it. It is going to be hard reset anyway when you apply the ROM update. Then you'd obviously connect to activesync as guest. And then apply the update
If that doesn't work, you might try unplugging your cradle from the current USB port and plugging it into another. Reinstall activesync so it will bind to that port. Then try the partnership/update again.
If that doesn't work, I'd use a work computer or a friend's computer. I'd install activesync, and try to patch from there.
Good luck!
You know, I actually thought about that before I posted my reply. It makes sense. The update is going to delete everything anyway so why not try it? I'll do that. Thanks.

I did everything you said to do except use a different computer. Nothing worked. I went to the HP help chat and they suggested a few things but that didn't work either. So I decided to go ahead and drag out the laptop and install ActiveSync and establish a guest partnership. It's in the middle of the update right now. It finally worked. I should have just listened to you in the first place. I guess I was just a little lazy. I'm so glad I have this site to turn to.
Anyway, why is it that it worked when I installed it fresh on the laptop, even though I had removed and reinstalled it on my desktop? Isn't that the same thing? What made the difference? I'm just curious. Well, I guess I'll just leave ActiveSync on my laptop in case I have to do something like this again.
I'd still like to know what the difference was?
Thanks for your help!
Valerie
Valerie,
I am glad you got it working. Actually, I can just make a guess. Activesync tends to scatter things just about everywhere on the computer. It's in the registry, in the profiles folder, programs folder, etc. It's probably a profile that wasn't deleted completely that is interfering. If it works other than the ROM update, I wouldn't worry too much about it.
After I went through all of that trouble, it doesn't seem to have fixed what it was suppose to fix, at least what I needed it to fix. The update was suppose to fix it to where the unit will correctly power down after a reminder alert sounds. My battery keeps dying because it come on for a reminder and if I don't hear or see it, stays on until the battery is dead. It's so aggravating.
Do you have anymore suggestions?
Valerie
Yes, I did do a restore. I thought the ROM update was a permanant thing. That's what I get for thinking. I guess that would be the problem then. I assume now that I just need to do a back up of just the information instead of registry stuff, and then re-install all of the programs. Is that what I need to do? Or, would just syncing it after the update do the same thing and put the old bugs back in? I don't want to have to re-install everything if I can avoid it. However, if that's what I have to do to fix it then I'm there. Do you have anymore suggestions? I'm so ready to fix this. I appreciate all your help.
Thanks,
Valerie
I feel your pain. Unfortunately, the prescribed method is to back up documents, files etc. then hard reset. You can restore the documents, but you must reinstall all of the applications from scratch.
A few Tips (I know you didn't ask for any) but I'll give you some anyway : Phase 1:
1. Using file explorer or Resco explorer take a few minutes and list out all the programs you use on your pocket pc that you have to install.
2. Go out and gather those installers and place them into one folder on your desktop machine
3. Gather the email reg codes, for all the programs. Phase 2:
1. Weed through your settings like bluetooth, wifi encryption keys, email setups, VPN, etc. etc.
2. Take your time and record the settings or take screenshots of the settings pages.
3. Don't forget to backup your IE favorites (I always do )
4. Throw all of this into the folder I mentioned above. Phase 3:
1. Think about what you do on a day to day basis. Surf? ebooks? connect to GPRS via bluetooth?
2. All of those functions require configurations. Make sure you've got those configs written down or screen shots exist for your scenario.
3. Make sure all of that info is in your new folder.
Once you are relatively sure you've got everything in the folder, then hard reset away. The process will go much quicker with everything at your fingertips.
I just wanted to say thanks. Everything worked great. Having everything at my fingertips made it even better. Thanks for that tip cause I wouldn't have done that. Anyway, I appreciate it.

One more thing I do is go into Resco Registry, export a few keys and reimport them after a rebuild. The most important, imo are:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ParaGraph\CalliGrapher
for Calligrapher settings,
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Pocket TV Browser
for Pocket TV Browser settings and
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Resco\Explorer\Options Bookmarks
for Resco Explorer Favorites.
