Boston Pocket PC has posted a story about what looks to be a really cool WiFi app. We've spent some time discussing war driving and WiFi router safety. So why not triangulate the signals while we're at it? WiFiFoFum is a 802.11 scanner designed for the HP iPAQ 5550 and 5450 to use the internal wireless card, although should also work with other wireless cards on other PDAs running PocketPC 2003. Please post feature requests on the forum. Please send photos of WiFiFoFum running on your device for the gallery below
I think that we need some clarification there. The radar is just a fake radar put there to give you a grafic representation about how close you are from your access point. But it does nos give you the exact direction where that access point is located. There is not way fisically using a wifi card to know where the access point is located. What the program does or was supposed to do is using the signal strengh from 0 to 100%, it draw a point in the radar where 100 % should be close to 0 and 100% should be close to the out border of the radar.
And I say that it´s supposed to be in that way because I´m setting at work with two AP near me. One is in my office 3 from me and the second one is in the server room around 100 feet from me. Both access point are shown in the same size of the radar even when I´m setting between them. And both AP are shown about the same distance from the radar centre.
In another hand, when I´m at home I use a peer to peer conection and this tool shows that I´m using WEP when I´m not.
So far, from all the free sniffers that I have been able to test. The best one without any doubt is Pocket Warrior.
But don´t get me wrong.
It´s good to see a new tool like this around us. Take in consideration that pocketwarrior has not been updated since long time.
I like the sniffer built into the Toshiba e805. It's nice too and seems to be a very similar app to this one.
