Hello, I am new to the pocket pc world and I am looking at purchasing a the Ipaq pocket pc or even any pocket pc, but only if I can find software for Japanese street maps. I have spent hours searching the internet (Google both in English and Japanese) for software that renders Japanese street maps. You know Streets and Tips or mapquest.com or perhaps Pocket Streets or whatever it is called? I want something like that, but for Japan. Can anyone please point me in a direction or give me some info on where I can find this. Right now I have nothing. Anything would be helpful. Thanks Email me at: Jim2@ascnetsolutions.com

I didn't check....but a company I used to work for had a competitor that was big into mapping software for the Government. The company is ESRI and can be found at http://www.esri.com ... Since they were heavily used in the National Oceanagrapic and Atmospheres Association (NOAA) I would think that they have maps of the entire world...
Let me know if this helps you out.

I was able to zoom in on Japan using their web based tool . I think they may have commercial software that may do the same thing....I don't know what the cost would be..

Jim-
Welcome. I can help you a bit. I live and work in Nippon-land and use MobileAtlas for PPC. Here's a purchase link. http://leche.goodcrew.ne.jp/leche/se...nfo?cg=0&fn=73 You have to buy the base program and then whatever sets of regional maps you want.
There has been an extended on-going discussion of good mapping / GPS ware over at the Pocket PC Japan site. Check out this thread. http://www.pocketpcjapan.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=10 In fact I'd recommend joing the group and looking through all the forums. The English speaking support group for PPC users of Japanese and Japan-related apps is pretty small but fairly committed. The owner of the site, Andrew Shuttleworth, is a hell of a guy and is always willing to help out users in need. He's gone out of his way a couple of times to find answers for me when my Japanese wasn't good enough to get the info on my own.
Any specific questions? Fire away.
