Ever wanted to turn your Pocket PC into a full-fledged FTP server where you can set file permissions, give people access to files in your Pocket PC directories from the Internet? I can't say that I've ever wanted to do that. I always thought sure, there's a great "Gee Whiz" factor in setting up a pocket FTP server, but in the long run, who cares? :? That is until I read pocketnow's review of ShareIt FTP. One scenario they enlightened me to was that Mac users can use FTP to transfer files to and from their Pocket PCs from their computers - since ActiveSync doesn't run on Mac. And the other would be if you worked with an office computer that had system policies preventing you from installing ActiveSync. WHAT'S HOT
... ShareIt FTP is a full-featured FTP server. That includes "policy" settings for individual users. For instance, you can allow some users to save new files on your Pocket PC, but not to over-write existing ones. Each user is given a name and a password that allows them to log on. You can also enable an "anonymous" log on if you're daring. With the low cost of a Pocket PC compared to a laptop or desktop system, you can allocate a Pocket PC for a small FTP server, either permanently or temporarily, with greater return on investment."
Do you think turning your Pocket PC into an FTP server is a good idea or bad?

I played with Resco's FTP a little while one evening and it is sort of cool. I uploaded one picture to the server - took about 3 tries...But the ShareIT product is an actual FTP SERVER for your PPC! In other words, you could have your e800 on the network and I could log in and download files from it...isn't that wild?
I'm trying to think of a good use for this...and I wasn't coming up with anything....and then it came to me....people could download songs or movies from you when you're over their house visiting...that is wild!

Ok! I have a noobie (dumb @ss) question.
Inorder to use ShareIT I presume I would have to have my device already setup to a network via active sync on a workstation.
and that
I wouldn't be able to just hook up my device (via a USB cable) to a desktop and gain network access using ShareIT via the tcp/ip and USB connection?

To err is human, but to really foul things up you need a computer.
Addic,
I don't think activesync would be involved at all. You'd use some sort of network connection like WiFi to turn your Pocket PC into a "node" or virtual workstation on the network. Then other workstations could connect to it and download files.
Oh! that's a bummer.
Being in the UK most businesses don't have Wifi (or BT) so the only way I could think of linking my device up was via a usb cable.
I guess I should just stick to playing me games and leave the networking stuff up to the Wizards!
