We have been discussing eBooks and the "How and When" they will hit local public libraries. Well, if you live in Michigan -- You're in luck. An article in the Detroit Technology news gives the details of a library consortium that will be offering eBooks free to their patrons. WooHoo! Please contact the Philadelphia Public Library and let them know how to get started! Too busy to hit the local book store for a copy of “The South Beach Diet” or that Lonely Planet guide to Thailand?
Thanks to the work of six area libraries, there’s no need to leave the comfort of your home to grab that best seller you’ve been dying to read.
A consortium of suburban libraries is adding eBooks to its repertoire of services. It’s the first group of public libraries in Michigan to offer this service and one of the first in the country.
EBooks, which are downloaded from the Web onto personal computers or hand-held devices, will be offered free of charge at six area libraries.
The books — about 900 of them — are licensed and can be downloaded one at a time. Titles can be checked out 24 hours a day for a three-week loan period. EBooks automatically check themselves back into the online lending library on their due date.
All a patron needs is a library card, an Internet connection and the free eBook reader software.
