PB is the first thing I reinstall on my device. Since you reference that it is about to expire I am assuming it is not meeting your needs? What are you looking for? Have you looked at Pocket Informant? As I said I find that PB meets my needs, but PI offers much more than the native calendar and contact apps.
Calendar + Today plug in works well for me. It lists all of your tasks on your today screen, broken down by day. I believe I found the thread on either this site or PPCGeeks. The developer is MohairSofa. Best of all, it's free. If it doesn't meet your needs, you're not out any $$.
