Hello all,
New to the forum... hope this is the right place to be!
I recently received an HP iPaq 510. Have had no trouble setting it up, but now I have a question about the way the device syncs:
I am using Outlook and have set the device to sync emails, contacts, calendar, tasks, etc. I would like the sync to happen either when I turn on bluetooth & am close to my computer, or when I plug the phone in via USB.
I thought I set it up that way...
However, when I leave from my computer (with my phone) for a while, I'll get new emails! Which is really great and handy, but it's a bit of a concern to me: If my phone is syncing while I am out in the middle of a park, it can only mean that it is syncing over my phone network. And I am using a terrible prepaid plan, so I think data connections are very expensive, and definitely not worth receiving emails in the middle of the park!
I would like to disable all automatic syncing / data transfer over my phone connection, and only allow syncing via Bluetooth or USB.
I believe you are mistaken. It syncs when sitting because it is still connected via Bluetooth, and when new syncable items appear, they get synced. Activesync does not have the ability to sync to your computer to your phone over your "phone network". If you do not want it to sync after initial sync, either disable Bluetooth or disconnect USB cable.

That can't be though, because I have turned BlueTooth off. And I was far from my computer (or any other identified BlueTooth device) when the sync happened.

That's also what I assumed, which explains my initial surprise here. But - just to be clear - it doesn't have to sync with my computer (obviously my computer can't sync via phone), it just has to sync with the corporate Exchange server, which maybe can be done via phone.

Again, I was far from my computer (as in, not in the same building) when I thought the sync happened, so this can't explain it either.
Got some more information... When I disable the wireless phone and turn on the BlueTooth, I expect to be able to sync via BlueTooth. However, when I try to manually sync, I get error 0x8502000E.
Doing some research, this means:

The device attempted to synchronize when the phone was off.
Before you try to sync, confirm that the phone is not in Flight Mode, and that the network signal is strong enough:
Go to the Today screen.
At the top of the screen, look at the Network Status icon. Do you have adequate coverage?
If you see an "x" on the Network Status icon, tap on it. Select "Turn off flight mode."
This kind of confirms what I was thinking - the phone is used to sync. Why is this the case though, and how do I change it??
