I own two HP IPAQ 1950s and have a question about their device IDs. When I buy software for one of the 1950s, Ill get a registration key that is specific for that handheld's device ID (which Im guessing is derived from the UUID in the HP Asset Viewer). I want to be able to buy software once, and load it on both handhelds. The problem is since each handheld has its own unique device ID, the registration key will not work on both handhelds, I have to buy each program twice. Is there a way to trick software into thinking both handhelds have the same ID, or even changing the configuration on handheld 1 to have the same device ID as handheld 2? Ive searched the internet high and low for regedits to change this or software to allow me to change device IDs, but no luck. Any suggestions, or is this impossible?
When you talk about the device ID's are you talking about the name that is given to the devices under Settings>System>About>Device ID>Device Name? Or are you talking about the serial numbers of the device.
If you are talking about the Device Name, which is the name your device will show when you use A/Sync or pairing with another device then Yes you can change it by following the above path.
The other one available to change is the Owner Name which can be changed under Settings>Personal>Owner Information.
If these two are the same on both devices, the only other ID available is serial numbers etc, which are dependant on device. I have taken this info from a hp2210 if this helps. Good luck.

Thanks. But it isnt the device ID name (the one used for syncing, which is changed through the settings), its the serial number. The software reads some kind of serial number that is unique for each machine, and generates a registration key that will only work with one serial number. When you go to Settings>System>HP Asset Viewer>System there is a value for UUID, which is different on each of my machines. Im guessing this is the device's ID, the ID that softwares use to generate unique registration keys. I dont know if it is possible to change this, and I know its probabely not legal since the liscensing agreements state that the software can only be used on one device, I just hate buying the software twice. Im guessing if it is possible to change the device's ID or serial number, It would have to be done through a registry edit program. Does anyone have any ideas or have done this before (or even wanted to do it before)???? Any input would be awesome. Thanks
I have encountered software that is keyed to the device ID (as set in the About display), user name, or email address (both set in the Owner info area). I have never had software keyed to the device serial number. Are you sure that is what they requested when they generated your key?
Yes. In order to load the software, you first download a trial version. When you start the trial version, the first screen that comes up is the registration screen. On this screen it gives the software title plus the device ID. The next step is to go-online and purchase the software, and when I purchase it, it asks for the device ID (which is a random alpha-numeric code that I have no clue where it is generated from, im guessing the device's serial number or some kind of unique Windows Mobile ID). After purchasing the software, I get emailed a registration key that will only work with the unique ID number. When I try to use the registration key on my second handheld, it wont take, because the device ID is different. The registration key is coded to match the unique device ID. The software I am working on is a drug database for pharmacists. This software is an excellent tool for pharmacists, but it is very pricey. That is why i dont want to have to buy it twice. Any more ideas? Anyone else with ideas? Thanks.
I know of no way around this as it seems that the intent is to make the installation not only user-specific but device-specific, which is not the norm with apps in general. You must need to contact the vendor if you change devices. Not totally unheard of but also not typical. You may need to contact them to ask how you would migrate the app if you change devices to get an answer.
Yep, thats the process. To install on another handheld, you email the company the new device ID and they will re-issue registration keys. The problem is now the original software and registration keys (for the first machine) are void. I dont know if there is a way to have both machines display the same the same ID, but its worth a try. Thanks anyway!
tmuthart I don't know whether you have heard of a site called XDA Developers Website. These blokes do ALL kinds of different programming for devices including changing ROM's etc. As a suggestion they may have something there, or one of the moderators would probably be able to give you a definitive answer/suggestion to your question if you want to try them if you can't get an answer here.
