Just got a Samsung SCH-i730 and it has windows mobile 2003 SE on it. Its my 1st phone with WM on it and I have some questions.
What OS can i upgrade to, can I go from 2003 to WM 5.0 or 6.0
Is there a program out there that can display missed calls like it does messages, For example, Where it says "No unread messages" is there program that I can put there to show me my missed calls.
tekjock welcome to the PPC Addict forum, and hopefully you will be able to find everything you're after for your PPC enjoyment.
Try a google search with your phone model and "WM5" and look through the results. I am not going to post a link to respect forum rules, as the ROM is leaked from what I read. Didn't try anything for Crossbow (WM6), but WM5 is definitely there. FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS TO THE LETTER so you don't "brick" your phone.
As for the program I would suggest you try a trial version of something like PhoneAlarm from Pocketgear.com, or a similar site. This will notify you of Missed calls, Voicemail, Email, SMS, MMS and also give you reminders, and allow you to change profiles like a normal mobile phone, and it will allow you to program specified times for changes to be done automatically. Used it for some time now and it is one of the first programs I install and recommend to newbies now.
Have fun and enjoy your new toy.

thanks for the info, I downloaded WM5 for my phone ... NOW ... if I make a back up of my phone can I easily revert back to as it is now .. OR .. what is the best way to backup my phone in case somthing goes worng.
thanks
PS ... FINALY a windows mobile forum where questions get answered ... a few others I never get answers. Thanks
Try a program like SPB Backup so that you can backup your phone to the current settings. Let us know how you go with your project. Once you start installing ROM's you'll get hooked. DON'T install ROM's for another device or you'll have some REAL trouble.
I'm thinking about Crossbow myself for the K-Jam which already has WM5 installed as standard. Good luck with your upgrade.

Just for claification, what are ROMs, if you are refering to PocketPC type software, im allready hooked. I have about 15 or so apps and games .. and I have had my phone for barely 2 weeks now
Read Only Memory - "Form of computer memory that does not lose its contents when the power supply is cut off and that is not rewritable once it is manufactured or written. It is generally employed for programs designed for repeated use without modification, such as the start-up procedures of a personal computer; the ROM is used for storing the program used in the control unit of the computer." - Britannica Concise Encyclopedia for a definition.
It is the basic programming, that you can't access or change, unless you have special programs, which make the device run. When you say you have downloaded WM5 for your phone, you have downloaded an Operating System. The ROM makes the operating system behave like the 'cooker' (ROM maker) wants it to perform, eg - default programs, which programs are included each time you hard reset, functions of the buttons on your phone at default etc. Slightly different to the way your PC works.
Check these blokes out - xda-developers - Powered by vBulletin - they cook ROM's for a bit of fun, and do a great job at it. Use the search feature with your phone model and you'll get some hits. This is where I got my Crossbow and flashed it last night. Quicker than WM5.
Just remember the software you buy makes changes to the registry and uses ROM to run, but if you hard reset the device it is not included, because the default settings in the ROM return. This is my understanding of ROM tekjock, so I hope it helps you.

The WM OS image is stored in an area of your device's non-volatile memory. Your device 'boots' by reading from this image which is protected even if you do a complete reset. Installing a new OS version reflashes this memory area, replacing the existing image with a new one. OS updates are released as ROM images that you use in this reflash process.
Very important. Make sure a ROM image is compatible with your device before reflashing with it.
Wasn't trying to treat youy like an idiot tekjock - you asked a question and I gave an answer. Thought I was helping - I apologise, and won't bother you in future posts.
