My local operator charges exorbatant rates for VoiceMail, and I always keep my phone on, but sometimes unattended, so I was wondering if there is a software which can record a message if I dont pick up the phone after a while.
Abhinav - Hopefully I'm wrong, but I haven't heard of any software that does this. I know there are programs which send sms to a missed call for you, but not act as a answering machine as such. Try searching for titles such as Auto SMS Reply or SMS Answering Machine as examples.
I know they don't do exactly what you're after, however they may help respond to important callers in a professional manner. I haven't used these, however I have read comments on them.

I think it is a problem for a very small percentage of users because free voicemail is a common feature in wireless plans. There is probably too small of a potential user base to interest a commercial developer. You may just need to end up writing your own app to address the problem and then putting it out there for others to try on for size.
Try CallWave. It will send you an email with an audio attachment of the voice mail recording. And they will soon be beta testing sending a transcript of the voicemail directly to your phone via SMS. The best part is the service is FREE!
