You certainly can remove the plugins from your Today screen. Simply go to Start - Settings - Today - Items and uncheck the features you do not want to appear on your main screen. Regarding your query about icons, you will need to find a third party app like spb shell or iLaunch which is a free Iphone base screen. It is available for download on this site. Just search for it.
