I am thinking on taking a pocket PC. However I want to ask you if I can use standart exe software made for standart PC. And if I can't use it directly is there an emulator that can start EXE files for windows for standart PC? Thanks in regards.
There have been a couple of stabs at making a Win95 emulator but AFAIK they have not gotten very far. For a DOS application, there would be DOSbox PPC or PocketDOS to try, but nothing is out there for desktop Windows. Or nothing that can actually create the environment to load and run an app.
What software do you need to work with? There are options that can work with files from many desktop programs in their native formats. This is the route many of us take to have file access on the road.
An option to consider (if you have the access setup to do so) is to have a host PC that you can log into remotely and control from your PPC. The app would actually run on the PC while displaying on your PPC screen. It is slower than an app running on your device but very feasible since many already use this type of solution to have access to a vital desktop program on their WM device.
The host PC is an interesting idea, however I have not such a host PC that to be turned on all day, and I suppose that the conection must be quite expensive - wireless internet (maybe) through a mobile phone network ... sounds expensive The software also seems to sound expensive. Pity that there is no emulator. How about emulator for Linux not Windows or emulator for the PC architecture itself that can run linux or windows...
The main issue you will encounter will be your RAM ceiling. Either of the DOS emulators above will set up a full x86 virtual machine on your device and I have in the past read that someone was going to attempt to load Windows into that using a stripped-down version of the OS (I think the software they were going to use to prepare it was called Lite98 - anyone remember this desktop utility?). I am not sure they were successful; the RAM of WM devices is much too small to do much beyond set up the DOS box and load Windows (which would probably take hours in itself). At least for now, you can forget having a functional desktop Windows session on your PPC.
There has been a great deal of work done developing a version of Linux specifically for the Toshiba e800 line. You might check the Brighthand forums to see what the operating status is and whether or not there may be something noising around related to your device. The work I know about relates to a bootable Linux that will launch from a memory card rather than an emulator running on top of WM as is the case with the two DOS emulators I mentioned.
The main problem is on the CPU. The chips used in WM devices do not have the same architecture as the x86 chips and all hardware calls must be recoded. Between the small RAM and the CPU issues, there is a huge hurdle to creating an environment in which the desktop OS can function and leave enough room for programs to run. The success with creating a working DOS session was huge.
With much greater availability of broadband options (with unlimited connection time) and wifi access points, web-based access to desktop systems like that of GoToMyPC are becoming much more attractive, even to home and small-business users. The processing horsepower remains in the PC and any programs on the PC are available.
You will most likely see the emergence of true Linux handhelds into the general market soon. The same will not be happening with desktop Windows.
This information is very useful, however I don't know the adress of the linux emulator developing site. Will you please give me the http? Thanks in regards.
Go to http://www.brighthand.com and do a forum search on the keyword linux. This is not a specifically linux site; it is another popular site with PPC users with sections for Palm and other handhelds.
A couple of other things you need to be clear about. The Linux is not an emulator; note that I said it is a project to create a bootable OS. It cannot operate WM and Linux simultaneously. The other thing is that I am only aware of work with Toshiba devices. Since this is a bootable OS, it will be largely device-specific. You will need to inquire about whether or not there are any known Linux projects related to your device.
I know that Linux is an operating system not an emulator, however I thought that the team is developing an emulator that can run linux on PocketPC. The creation of an emulator that can run software for standart PC Windows or Linux is a good idea. If some one of you develope such emulator please write to the topic so I to be able to download it .
