Any of you know of a quick way to change where the "file synchronization" folder can be changed through ActiveSync?
Right now
I have it pointing to:
C:\Documents and Settings\Jefferson M. Kim\My Documents\Pocket_PC My Documents\
But I want it to point to
C:\Documents and Settings\Jefferson M. Kim\My Documents\JeffersonKim My Documents\
Unfortunately, it's greyed out and I can't change it myself. DOH!
Probably a newb question, but I tried searching for it and couldn't find any entries on it.
Excellent question! I'm even thinking about putting this as a tip. I've found the answer for you on another forum. Here is what Raj has to say from the Computer Hardware Forum:
You will need to make the changes in the registry if you want to change thetarget folder settings since Activesync will not allow you to do it. Since you are going to modify the Registry contents which is never supported by any of the manufacturers, it is recommended you backup the registry information using the File -> Export feature in the registry.
Step 1: Start the Registry Editor
Go to the start menu, then RUN, and type REGEDIT.
Step 2: Locate the synchronization key by navigating through the following folders.
The ********** will be a string containing a combination of numbers and alphabets. If you have had several partnerships created, then you will find >1 entries here. You will need to identify the key containing the current partnership information. You can identify which string holds your current partnership information is by looking at the Briefcase Path key. It should display the synchronization folder, and will also your device name. This is the key we need to edit.
Double-click on the Briefcase Path key, and the key will load so you can edit it. Enter the name of the folder you want your device to sync to. Ensure you enter the correct path to the new folder you wish to target and insert \ at the end of it.
Step 3: Restart your computer.
After booting, when you synchronize your target folder would be the one specified by you. Now you can move the contents of the old folder and/or delete it.
If you want the short-cut on your Desktop to point to the new folder location, then you will need to edit the location by following the steps below:
* Right-click the short-cut pointing to the My Document synchronization folder and click Properties.
* Edit the Target location and point it to your new folder.
great answer - 100% correct, accurate, and helpful...
but ....
What about changing the default location of "My Documents" on the device? I have a mere 64mb of system memory but a super-duper 1gb SD expansion card ; yet activesync wants to dump everything onto the system memory rather than the empty card that is sitting idle....
Now before you (or someone else...!!) replies with the "quit whining and do it manually!!" answer (which, to be honest would be my reply...) I should add that I have to provide a solution for a problem that will be given to a group containing some of the most technophobic people the UK has to offer... so it has to be as simple and easy as possible which removes the option of telling them to stop whining and do it manually....... !!
(the "problem" is that our CEO has come up with the great idea of doing a podcast for employees that they will listen to on their pda's outside of working hours.... each one looks like it is going to weigh in @ about 30mb which isnt going to fit to well on devices with 64mb of system memory...)
I use a programme to file synchronization, which is called File Sync. Auto file and folder sync software is a necessary thing for everybody. That is why I use this program and haven't such problems.
I use a programme to file synchronization, which is called File Sync. Сomputer file backup is a necessary thing for everybody. Program File Sync is distinguished by convenient interface in usage, clearness and clearness of solved problems, applied character and absence of difficult panels of menu. That is why I use this program and haven't problems with synchronization. May be it will help you, too. Good luck!
