Hey rrhutch,
No luck with software so far but I did find an interesting feature that will let you select text without the stylus.
Actually, I guess it would depend on what model you own, but I found that with my HP iPAQ hw6515, there's a button that you can press when your cursor is in a field that will allow you to bring up the edit menu and from there, you can 'select all'.
For example, if you are typing info into contacts and would like to delete the text that you just typed, you can press the button located left of the Windows key and the edit menu will pop up...scroll down with the center navigation key [I'm assuming that's what you meant by center jog dial] and click 'select all'. The down side to this is that everything in the active field will be highlighted, but it's still a nice feature to make note of. I noticed though that this doesn't work for Word or Notes, but as far as Contacts, Messages, Tasks and Appointments, you can select the text in the manner just mentioned.
Hope this helps somewhat
