Hi,
I've given up now on trying to upgrade my toshiba e800 (BlueTooth version) to windows 2nd ed, as I've tried about 8 times, and I'm getting the same issue.
My e800 says in the settings that the system is:
ROM Date: Oct 26 2003
Rom Version: 1.0108.0409
Os version: 4.20.1081 (Build 13100) - what version of windows is this ???
I desperately want to upgrade to Windows 2nd edition so that I can use this PDA in landscape mode and use the full resolution of the PDA.
I've gone on the Toshiba UK website and tried downloading the windows 2nd edition download ("Windows 2003 SE Update") and followed the instructions:
1. Disabled Activesync connection as it says in the PDF instructions;
2. pressed the 2 keys and reset using the stylus - but this is where the problem arises, as I don't get the message the instructions say, instead I get a list of words appear on the pda, reading:
EBOOT.BIN (this appears in red, and the following appear in black)
XIP.BIN
KERNEL.BIN
MISC.BIN
- I can't select any of them, and can't move to another screen. When I insert the pda into the cradle, and click on start on the PC screen to start the download to the PDA, the PC says that it can't communicate with the PDA.
Has anyone come across this and managed to solve the problem ? :?
ANy help gratefully received.
Welcome to the forums Jag!
I'm not sure what is causing the issue you are talking about. What I would suggest is that you hard reset your device as follows: The small rubber covered area just above the bluetooth radio switch has a switch under it. With your stylus (paperclip, whatever...) move that to the right and then back to the left. This interrupts all electrical flow (including the backup battery) and causes a hard reset.
Once you have done that, cradle your device, and you should be able to sync via activesync without an issue. Then execute the upgrade program. It should run without a problem.
Also, please be sure to note that there are 2 different upgrade versions, 1 for e800's with WiFI, and one for the ones with Bluetooth. The one you SHOULD be using will have a BT at the end of it. If you are using the wrong file, that could also be causing your problem.
Hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions.
JD
Thanks JD for your suggestion re doing a hard reset by using the switch which is covered by the rubber flap. I've done this, and then pressed the 2 keys which the PDF manual suggests to get the PDA ready to upgrade to Windows 2nd ed, and I'm getting the same message on the PDA:
EBOOT.BIN (this appears in red, and the following appear in black)
XIP.BIN
KERNEL.BIN
MISC.BIN
The PC also can't communicate with the PDA (I'm also using the BT version of the software download from the Toshiba website).
Any other thoughts ?
Also, has anyone else encountered this message on their Toshiba e800 when attempting to upgrade ? :?
I don't know anything about pressing 2 keys being required for an upgrade. I'm not even sure which 2 keys you are pressing, but DON'T press them anymore. Clearly, it doesn't like it when you do that!
Try it the way I said first, and ignore the PDF document. Don't disable your activesync connection at all...you won't be able to connect to your computer without it.
Hard reset, the way I said to first, then sign on to activesync as a GUEST USER - Do not set up another partnership! Execute the upgrade file, and it should install. It will take about half an hour! Do NOT remove the PDA from it's power source during this time. Keep it plugged into a wall socket (the barrel connector) to ensure you don't lose power during the upgrade.
Hope this helps!
