Audiobooks are one of my favorite things to listen to on my PPC. And, all Pocket PC's are Audible-ready devices. They have a proprietary encryption that would make Microsoft green with envy, so you have to have a device that can play Audible files, and many stand alone mp3 players are not compatible.
There is a huge selection of books, from classics to current fiction, radio programming which you can sync to your device via their desktop manager on a daily basis, or as often as you would like and just about everything in between.
They offer several plans, ranging from 14.95 for their basic listener, which includes one recurring (daily, monthly or weekly) program and 1 audiobook per month, or for 21.95 per month, you can get 2 audiobooks.
Not included on their website is an "ultimate listener" plan which allows you 12 books for a fixed price (around $120) or about $10 per book. All you have to do to get that plan is call into their customer service center!
Another nice feature is that you can hold those book credits for as long as you wish. They will not expire!
You can also access any book you have purchased and redownload at any time, forever.
Right now, they are advertising a free iPod shuffle (512mb) with a new subscription, so if you are thinking of getting a Shuffle for someone for Christmas, this may be a good time to sign up! Audible
You can actually listen to them on any MP3 player but they make you jump through hoops to do it. You download type 4 files and use the audible manager to burn them to CD. Then rip them back down to MP3. I had a 28 hour book I moved to my MP3 player but it took 15 CDs to do it.

Yeah. . A Shuffle would be great! "I wanna listen to an audiobook today, but I don't really know which one. . "
I joined for the three free books, and I like it a lot. the $21.95 monthly seems too expensive though.
$21.95 isn't too bad actually considering the average hard cover book is coming in around $29. If you listened to just one a month, you'd be ahead of the game.
Wish I had time for that type of listening...maybe when I start my "road warrior" stuff I will.
I have a number of audible books. You can purchase any one individually without any kind of plan or subscription and recently I have found several I wanted on sale from $6-$11. It works perfectly now but I had a tough time setting it up and eventually found an easier way to get a file on the PPC than their plan which is to go to SEARCH - find the file after it is downloaded to the computer and drag and drop it to "pocket pc" which is a subheading of "mobile device" which in turn is a subheading of "My Computer" in the START menu.
I have successfuly transferred AUDIBLE and "My Library" to other computers and handhelds. I believe there is some limit like 5 devices. When you access Audible on yhour pda you can start out where you left off last time. Also, clicking on "file" lets you "select programs" so you can listen to any other book that is on your memory card(which is really necessary for such large files).

Digital843, I'm not 100% sure I understand what you mean by this. The simplest way to transfer Audible files (and have them play correctly) is by using the Audible desktop companion, Audible Manager. You have the option of adding a device or devices, and then adding the content in your library using the drag and drop method.
What easier way did you find than this that will actually play the content?
Since the files are DRM protected to the specific purchaser, your device must be "activated" using Audible Manager at some point, or it will not play the content.
Once you have activated the device, I have found that you can use a card reader to transfer content from your PC using Windows Explorer.
