STORY UPDATED: VGA pictures - mini review!
A few eagle-eyed Addict readers pointed out to me that Access has finally released their new ENGLISH NetFront Browser v 3.2 for Pocket PC. The Japanese version has been out for awhile and we haven't heard too much about it since. There is an introductory price of $19.80 for new users and if you are upgrading it's $14.80 to upgrade from version 3.1 to 3.2.
New Features: ● Supports Pocket PC2003 and 2003SE
● Supports Flash(R)
By embedding Macromedia(R) Flash(R) Player into a Pocket PC2003 or 2003SE device, you can browse Flash contents on the device.
● Supports JavaTM
NetFront is compliant with J2METM CDC and handles "JV-Lite2 CE Edition," a Java running environment of ACCESS that supports CDC HI.
● Rapid-RenderTM
Speeds up displaying the Web page by displaying the HTML text and the hyperlinks first, and then displaying images and tables.
● Smart-Fit RenderingTM
For easy view, this function fits the Web page to the size of the PDA screen.
This function also enables you to browse general Web pages without using the horizontal scroll bar.
● Muli-Window Browsing
By selecting the tab for each window, you can open up to five windows at once and switch from one to another. Has anyone upgraded yet? What do you think of the new version? Better? Faster? or Not worth it?
D'Oh!
I didn't see that $14.95 price until you posted it. And here I was thinking I got a deal at $19.95.
$5 stupid tax I guess.
I sent along some screenshots from the registered version to you. Can you post 'em if you get a chance? The browser doesn't seem any faster; in fact it may be slower than 3.1.
But the extra features are a nice addition.
Kamikun writes: Yea, I'm weak. While PocketGear is offering $10 off the price of NetFront (normally $30, now $20 for everyone - go to the website; the discount code is on PG's page) I went ahead and registered.
PROs: Look at the attached pictures. No more GigantabarT address filling up the top 1/3 of your screen. Forms seem to work. Java works (haltingly). Now StrongBad appears on the PPC. (Plus I can finally access PPCAddict from the Tosh now.)
CONs: Hope you like that font cause you're stuck with it for life. No
amount of option changing or registry hacking or rebooting will alter it. I
know there is some font default switch somewhere in the registry to fix this but it's really starting to drive me nuts.
One question: does anyone have a good reason why NetFront cannot be
installed to the SD Card? This thing is big (about 8 meg big with the Java
files) and I was hoping I'd be able to save some RAM.
Thanks for the photos Kamikun. Here's a hint with the storage card. You've already installed it. Try grabbing the whole netfront folder and moving it to your storage card. Change your shortcut on your start menu and you should be surfing just fine. 8-) I've done this for awhile now with no adverse reactions. (but haven't tried it with 3.2 yet)
Here are typically the results I get with 3.1. It takes longer to launch. BUT.. I find it much faster for surfing - probably due to the main memory being conserved.
Give it a try and let me know what you think!
I have used netfront 3.1 for a year now and I have used it installed in the main memory and a storage card and I have not noticed a difference in performance.
Regards Hoffman
Hoffman and Brad -
Thanks for the advice. I'll try moving the folder later on and let you know what happens. Any ideas about the font being unchangable? What's going on there?
Thanks for posting the pics, Brad. Again, the working Java and the reduction of the address bar back to human size makes this worth the price. Over at PPCThoughts others have noted there are some deals with using the D-Pad to scroll and I can confirm that. It seems to take two successive clicks in any one direction to change the actual scrolling direction... strange.[/list]
I grabbed the demo last night, and have to say, it rocks. SO much better than PIE. But as for Brad's comments about the font...
Tools...Browser Setting....View (tab)
There is a "Change" button in the "Font" box. This will allow you too change from Courier too Tahoma IF you enable the "Proportional Font" checkbox.
I immediatly began searching the various options as soon as I saw that font.. that would have been a deal breaker for me, but now, I'll definetly be picking this one up.
Bru...
Those were actually Kamikun's comments...I haven't had a minute to try it yet. Currently I am using PIE with the PIEPlus plug-in I bought a few years ago. It seems acceptable. I might try Netfront this weekend if I can catch a break. Hope it is faster.

Bru, there was some kind of weirdness that I think was unique to my system. In trying to uninstall and move NF to the storage card (which BTW it won't do... the install defaults to main memory) it broke whatever default switch had the Bell MT font as the only choice. I also followed your recommendation and that may have helped too.
All I know is I was able to choose Tahoma as my font, I'm happy with it and I don't want to mess with it again as long as it is working.
:?
In version 3.9.1 of Tweaks2K2 was added support for NetFront 3.2. Now you can change the ID of NetFront making it pass as IE 6.0 or as Pocket Internet Explorer.
hey,
I have heard alot about how fast this version is. I have this trial version loaded to built in storage. But I have not seen the speed boost.
What Settings is everyone using?
