USB active sync problems: IPAQ - not recognized, Dell - fine

Hello,
All of a sudden, a few weeks ago I started having the "USB device not recognized" problem with my IPAQ 5555 recently. I am sure you either ehard or ran into this ANNOYING message before.
There was a solution - serial cable. I was still able to sync my info and transfer files, although VERY slowly. But it is still not aceptable. This happens at work and at home, on XP latest SP installed and on unpatched XP, with Activesync 3.7, 3.7.1, 3.8... uninstall, reboot, reinstall, remove USB device from Device Manager, powered USB Vs. not powered... tried everything that I could find on the net. NO LUCK.
Enter the Dell X30 and x50v.... WORKS LIKE A DREAM. Same exact verison Activesync recognizes both devices on both machines (PCs running XP).
What gives? I am completely stuck at this point and have no clue what to try next. Again, I tried all versions of Activesync, complete reinstalls, different machines... And the fact that the other PPCs sync just fine hints that it is probably something other then USB.
Any thoughts?
Thanks!

Sounds like a driver problem in the Ipaq. Soft reset has probably been tried and I HATE recommending hard reset. Might try an Ipaq specific site (assuming nobody comes along right here with the answer) for similar problems and see if anyone has fixed it without the dreaded hard reset.

Thanks for your reply...
Tried soft reset, of course, and even did a hard reset on the damn thing... same error with factory default settings - device not recognized.

If it is the exact same behavior on two different machines, but your iPAQ synchs just fine via serial. Then I believe it's your USB cable/cradle. They can go bad. I had to throw one out just 3 days ago myself.

Thanks...
I actually have TWO usb cradles (for the two machines mentioned - work and home PCs)... Same error message on either machine/cradle. I am starting to suspect that it may be the PPC unit issue... see these:
http://www.ipaqhq.com/forums/archive...p/t-12164.html
http://www.ipaqhq.com/forums/archive...p/t-10395.html
Really odd, as I take great care of the thing and dont recall any mishandling of it... usb just stopped syncing one day.

I don't know how the port is designed on the Ipaqs but did you check for a bent pin? That sounds likely if the hard reset didn't help and 2 cradles won't do. Serial may use a different set of contacts in the port from USB.

The problem might also be with your USB hub/port. Do a check with the same USB port using other USB devices

Ok, I am looking at the sync port on one of these iPAQs right now. I would suggest taking your iPAQ outside or into a bright well-lit room and examine the sync connector. There is a little piece of metal (aluminum?) filament that surrounds the port. That could easily be bent - possibly inhibiting a good connection. Also take a look at all of the little connectors, is there anything covering them that doesn't look in place? i.e. pocket fuzz, dirt? a wooden toothpick can be used to gently remove obstructions. If your filament is bent, you can use a small flathead screwdriver to bend it back. Just be gentle...and this is of course at your own risk.

Thanks... Looks clean and healthy...
I noticed something that may add some light to this... may be...
When active sync/PC gives me the USB device not recognized message, another message pops up on the PPC. Cannot connect: You have no modem entries created and not network card present. (along with the settings link).
Wonder why - Activesync is not configured to sync through a modem... or at least I havent changed when this whole thing started happening.

Oh my! Something about what you posted reminded me of a basic setting that may have been changed! From memory: Open ActiveSync on your Pocket PC, go to the bottom tools menu (I think that's what it's called). Make sure that you have your computer names selected up top. Then hit the options button. There's a drop down more you can select what type of connections are acceptable for this computer and your office computer. Make sure USB is one of those accepted connections

ok, this is a slim chace, but you could try disabling any virus scanners and firewalls on your PCs and see if they are blocking the PPC from syncing. Otherwise, I think it is hardware.

Given that you are not the only one having problems with their 5555 - yes, I just started having problems within the last two weeks, as well - I suspicious that something in one of the many MS XP updates has damaged something. The same problem is manifest on both home desktop and work desktop. A hardware issue - starting at the same time for both of us - being the root cause for us both is not terribly likely.

Up until several days ago a connection was sometimes achievable, but would not last long - meaning several minutes. Sometimes disconnecting the USB, rebooting the computer, and then reconnecting the USB would establish a connection lasting several minutes.

Having exactly the same with my IPAQ 6915 with Mobile 5 since 29th of Feb, the XP patch hint is the one I believe in too... I hope we will find a patch for that soon as well I will start digging...

Smile

Since my original posting I made two changes that resulted in a temporary solution. 1) Updated to ActiveSync 4.5 and 2) moved connection from USB hub to USB receptacle directly on PC. Problem dissappeared for a little over a week. Problem reappeared after allowing another MS update.

Note that I made the same changes on my machine at work, but it is still running just fine. My rationale for this is that our IT department doesn't let everything from MS get installed immediately. I can add with confidence that the only updates for my PC at work were from Adobe.

If reinstalling ActiveSync fixes it again, I'm going to be very selective about updates from MS. I've also been considering upgrading my PPC, but don't want to spend the money if this problem is going to carry forward.
