New Today Screen Eyecandy: Everything Today

Spotted this new Today screen utility called Everything Today(affiliate) that seems similar to eXPerience and some of the other Today screen replacements. The main difference in this is it includes a lot of features you'd probably have to pay extra for. It has built in Weather, RSS news, World Time and a picture viewer to name a few. Runs $20.00
"Everything Today Is the ultimate add-on for your mobile deviceand todayplus. It gives you Weather, news feeds, Syst info, Poom/calendar, shortcuts, Dynamic background changer... "

I have been using this skin from the first issue, and liked it then. Now version 2 is out with so much more. I find I don't need any other Today Screen applications, EveryThing Today replaces them all. The new poom section is great, lots of flex-ability. Corbcut did a great job!

This looks cool! I may try it out and see if it's compatible with SE-VGA.

Yes, I was looking for a trial too as I would be surprised if this worked on VGA devices. There's not even a developer's web site that I could find.

That's pretty sad. "Selling" a skin for an app (TodayPlus) that is no longer available and was FREE when it was. (And if one can find it, one needs to work around the author's automated expiration)

sracer, what do you mean by this? Is it truly just a skin and not an app? I thought it was a full fledged app.

Yes, that's what I mean. EverythingToday is a "Skin" for TodayPlus. Look at the page you linked. "Requirements: arm, todayplus"
TodayPlus is the actual plug-in... it provides all of the base functionality. EverythingToday is a skin for it. Granted, the skin requires a lot of work to develop, but it, by itself can do nothing. It REQUIRES TodayPlus.

Since the author of TodayPlus pulled the program and all legitimate copies in existence stopped functioning due to a beta timeout there is no legitimate way to use this skin. I totally missed the TodayPlus requirement on the purchase page.

EXACTLY!! It's one thing (and a very shady thing at that) to provide support for an app that is no longer actively available, but quite another to actually make money from it!

This brings back the whole TodayPlus situation which I was following way back when. It was the most unusual thing I've ever seen with a program, freeware or otherwise.
If I recall correctly the developer released it freeware, and a lot of evangelists jumped on the bandwagon since the app was so good. Many people spent dozens of hours producing really nice skins (like your cabin one the name of which I can't remember, sracer) only to find that the developer had put a timeout on each release. In his mind the program was beta and that there was nothing wrong with putting a beta timeout in it. Only problem with that is that he didn't tell anybody and the top users got very vocal about it in the official support forum when they found out. The developer didn't like that and he just walked away. No statements to anybody, nothing.
Some of those long time users hacked the beta timeout which is a no-no but they are still using the s/w today.
I think that's an accurate account, isn't it sracer?

Yes, that's a pretty accurate description of what happened. There is just one addition that I would make... 4-6 months prior to the final expiration, there was another expiration date. Users harrumphed about it, the author fixed it saying that it was in there "by mistake".
Of course it was an early warning sign that it wasn't going to be free forever, but users ignored that sign.

I have had TodayPlus from the beginning, and love the application. There are many people using TodayPlus by setting there clock back after a reset then they load the app then set there clock to the proper date. SRS has said he doesn't mind members doing this, and he even said open discussion of the application is fine, as long as the hacks are not distributed. So if you can find it get it. As an x moderator of the forum which went down today, I will miss it greatly. At this time there are members trying to host the old forum themselves, and I hope it comes to pass.
As far as there being a version put 6 months ago that had an expiration date in it is true, but they all did. SRS never said there was a mistake. Most beta software has a time limit, so that all beta tester a sure to have the newest version.

That is not quite what happened. Many hardcore TodayPlus users were taken completely by surprise by the first "time limit". The time limit was not mentioned until it expired. There may have been an understanding that the code was beta, but there was NOT an understanding that the beta was time limited. THAT is why there was so many bad feelings about the expiration.
Also, if SRS actually said that it was okay to crack his time limit, why didn't he simply release the same version with the limit removed? Removing the limit is trivial and would've taken less than 3 minutes to change the code, recompile, and upload it to a webspace.

No where did I say in my post that srs said it was Ok to bypass the time limit!!!! What I did say was he didn't care that people were setting there clocks back. Also the complaints about the expiration came at version 11 by some of the Beta Testers, when srs disapeared and the app went dead. The ones that caused 90% of the complaining were the ones not part of the official beta team, that wanted the versions before the config file. If you want to check the whole story including the official post from srs got to .http://www.pdacorps.com/forum/forum_...676&PN=2&TPN=3 This whole thing has blown way out of perportion. I really don't want to hear anymore about it, for a so called dead program, it continues to grow. But of course it doesn't matter what I want.

I just find it sad that people are so gullible that they are willing to spend $20 for a skin of a discontinued application that was in Beta test. The fact that they have to do all sorts of gymnastics to get the code (TodayPlus) to work just adds to the absurdity.
That's just downright foolish when there are less expensive actively supported alternatives out there.

sracer! You are allowed your opinion, and don't get me wrong it is vaulued. But where is the application that gives you all this.
1. 5 days detailed weather for 8 cities
2. Sunrise and sunset, moonrise and set information
3. 48 program launcher
4. RSS news reader
5. Poom section with tasks and filters
6.Extremly detailed system information
7. Detailed owner information screen
8. World time for 4 cities
9. Picture viewer with unlimited number of pictures
Now remember this is ONE Plugin not 9.
The answer to your question! "Why would anyone spend $20.00 on a skin" Peolple do because they like it, and having an application that does all this is great. By the way I don't think anyone spent $20.00 for it, I got mine with a discount code for less than $10.00.

I think sracer's point is valid- if the author (srs) has no problem with others bypassing the beta timeout by resetting their system clocks then why doesn't he just release a version with the timeout removed? Until he does that there is no legimitate way to use this program, no matter how useful it is.

I must be gullible

Well, I was one who forked over $20 for this. The original posting on this site made it sound like a good app and a good deal, and I knew nothing about TodayPlus and the issues surrounding it. I certainly wasted my money. Not only has the seller not responded to my e-mail (the help file says e-mail him and he'll send a link to TodayPlus - which I eventually found elsewhere), but the installation process was manual and painful, and the skin doesn't even work. I just get some random junk labels on the screen (I did get TodayPlus to work with the default slider skin, so it isn't the problem, but I don't like the idea of having to work around the expiry after every reset - had I known about that I would never have done this).
I've sent mail to Handango suggesting that they should not be carrying this "product", given it depends on an expired and no longer officially available program, and requesting my money back; we'll see if I have success.

Someone submitted this via our news link and from the screenshots looked pretty good. I didn't mean for anyone to get burned.

sracer,
--personal attack edited out by moderator--- Everything Today is a add-on/skin for TP, An add-on is when you add things to a programe that dosent do the things you add, like pic veiwer, background changer AND MUCH MORE. Of course i sell my work i spend alot of time making it, graphics, code, ect. And todayplus still works fine, NO jumping through hopes, ---personal attack edited out by moderator---

---personal attack edited out by moderator--- ET is a add-on/skin for todayplus, and yes it's simple to het todayplus. ---personal attack edited out by moderator--- If you have TP instaled then all you have to do is tap on ET2.exe file and it installs through active sync. And ET works just fine ask poeple that already useing it. ---personal attack edited out by moderator---

It appears that corbcut, the master of the idiotic post, is the author of the skin under discussion.
If you want to get the community to ban your product very quickly, keep posting like you have here.

Personal attack?! I said that it was sad to be selling a skin for an unsupported beta application that is no longer legitimately available. What is so "personal" about that?
Have I gone into the 2 main Brighthand threads and made any posts about your skins? Have I gone over to PDACorps and mentioned anything there?
No, and No.
"Someone" submitted "news" about your skin to this site and it popped up as a news item. I simply pointed out the fact that TodayPlus was required... a crucial fact that is a mere footnote on your Handango product page.
Nothing I've said is a lie. If you believe so, then please point it out so that either I can correct that or show why it is true.

I have never posted a comment to a site before so this maybe some what disjointed, but here goes.
I also was one who trusted PC Addict as well as Handgo and layed out 20 bucks for Everything Today. I saw the fact that "todayPlus" was required, but in my wildest dreams I never thought Handgo would ever take anyones money for a skin when the host app was no longer aviavable. After paiding my 20 bucks and downloading the skin I went looking for the "TodayPlus" app. You all know how that turned out.
I have emailed Handgo and requested my money back, they have not answered my email in 48 hours. It will a long time before I buy anything from Handgo again.
Thanks for the Vent
