One of the biggest names if not the biggest name in Pocket PC software distribution, Handango has been mentioned quite frequently here on Pocket PC Addict. Some of the news has been good some has been bad. We had heard talk about them redesigning their site and yesterday, we got a sneak peek. The overhaul is being described as the result of "new design is a result of months of work and literally years of listening to customers..." If you'd like to see what we saw, you can take a sneak peek too. "Some of the major changes include:
-- A snappy new look & feel!
-- Ability to shop by device using device images
-- New personalized homepage presents only relevant content
-- Ability to create homepages for each device you own
-- Improved, fly-out navigation menus
-- Enhanced search offers suggestions for spelling & product names
-- More featured products & recommendations on each page
-- New member account branding and layout "
Looks like a smart upgrade of the site. Clean, easy to follow and well organized. I especially like the new browsing breakdown by device as well as the homepage by device functionality.
Any idea when she goes live?
Thanks for sharing.
Personally I think they should get rid of the reviews - they are committing fraud and a material misrepresentation by only disclosing favorable reviews and editing reviews. Just a note to anyone that purchases a product from Handango - they would lose a dispute 100% of the time due to this practice... they could actually be sued by state and federal governments for this business practice.
"Stealing" may be an overly dramatic way to describe it, but Handango is a perfect example of the "Frog in boiling water" experiment. for THAT they deserve a healthy dosage of flack.
Speaking as one totally torqued customer who has had enough of Handango and its complete lack of customer service, I'm definitely in the market for a new primary retail outlet.
Despite the discounts and specials that Handango often runs, I've learned the hard way that without a support system you're going to lose as a customer in the long run. And considering they are taking a 50% commission from developers... (for what exactly?)... I don't want to give these jerks any more of my money.
If only more developers would offer PayPal options on their homepages I'd be more than willing to purchase directly.
How's PocketGear? Reputable? (I could do without the spam though).
UPDATE: See below.
I must say that I've been using PocketGear now for a few months and found them reliable and prompt with their customer relations.
Several weeks ago when I updated the ROM on my PPC I unfortunately misplaced the activation codes to several of my software downloads However upon request PocketGear emailed me the necessary codes within 24 hours!
Thanks Noolly,
I've spent my last damn dime with Handango... I'm not going to bend over for that kind of service ever again. I'll set up an account with PocketGear the next time I feel the software buying urge coming on...
UPDATE: In the interest of fairness I should state that Handango and I seem to have worked out our differences, so I will continue to use their service. I'm just going to be sure to give a listen to what other PPC sites are offering.
Well, 40 and 50% is almost there.
40% without doing any advertisement is a killing. I'm really very disappointed with them.
Another bad thing is that now your software only show up when customers select software for one specific PPC if you have your profile for that program updated with that device. I don't know about how many different devices are now in the market all I understand is what OS and Processor my programs use. I believe that our sales will go down due to this issue unless we start checking that list of PPCs and checking what processor and what os they use. I would recommend Handango to add in to that combo at least what OS use every PPC.
I have to say that I have had no problems with Handango. I like them and their offers.
I wish they provided more than 50% to developers. I will make sure that I purchase from developers whenever possible to support them as much as I can from now on.
UPDATE: In the interest of fairness I should state that Handango and I seem to have worked out our differences, so I will continue to use their service. I'm just going to be sure to give a listen to what other PPC sites are offering.
Kamikun: That was the whole mistaken spanish download instead of the Japanese version, right? How did it all get worked out? Give us the scoop.

No secret machinations or subterfuge... Brad sent along a letter on Friday morning (US east coast time) to Ectaco, the developer of both programs, pointing out the flame thread I had going here and suggesting they might want to contact Handango directly and move things along.
I don't know if Ectaco ever did get in touch with Handango but about the very same time (early Friday morning) I finally got a response from Handango's customer service department saying they would credit my account.
Dr. Joel commented here that it also took a week before he got an answer from Handango when he had a problem. I think it really did just take a week for the thing to move. The reason I'm still a little miffed is because of the way Handango handled this. If they had just sent me one acknowledgment email that said something like, "We have received your refund/return request dated July 21. You can expect to receive either an final determination on this request or a notice that more review time will be needed by July 25th..." or something like that, and then followed up on it, it sure would have kept me from feeling that I was getting shut out.
After the website promises a response within 48 hours and 96 go by without a peep you start to get paranoid. That's why I went ballistic.
But... it's all good now. I went ahead and made the purchase of the intended software taking Handango at their word that they will credit the account. See... as I used to tell my Econ students back when I taught high school in the States, the one essential component in all transactions - more important than money and more important than value -- is trust. Without trust, economies of all scales spurt to a halt and die. As a buyer I have to trust that you are really in the business of providing goods and services over the long haul and, as a seller, I have to trust that you will pay for the good or service that I provide and not try to cheat me.
And that would lead to a good segue on why the eBook market has never really gotten off the ground... :?
