Is anyone having problem install the ROM update for the 4100 series iPaq. It tells me that it cannot determine my model number, and then quites the update process. HP's tech support was of now help since the representative gave me the equivalent of a blank stare over the online help chat.
I have been tracking what appears a fairly widespread ROM upgrade problem.
Uses have reported device ID problems when attempting the new 1.00.14 ROM upgrade.
It appears that several batches of 4150's left the factory without having the necessary device/ serial number hard wired into the ROM.

I had the same problem and fixed it using the following procedure. This is VERY RISKY. You are on your own if you decide to try it.
1. Verified all asset info was blank in the asset viewer. In addition, the upgrade was reporting revision level 1.00.07 and blank model ID and language before failing with Error 244.
2. Copied EnterBootLoader.exe from the upgrade files folder to the h4150 using ActiveSync and tapped it to execute it. h4150 enters brick mode (hard reset will not help return to normal Windows CE mode).
3. Executed mtty11a.exe on the desktop to connect to the h4150 via the USB/Serial cradle. I had to restart the h4150 (it stays in brik mode) to have mtty recognize a USB port to talk to. Press Enter to get a "USB>" prompt in mtty.
4. Issue the command "BTRouter 115200" in mtty to put the h4150 in blootooth router mode. Soft reset h4150 to exit router mode. It is back in brick mode and connection to mtty is still available.
5. At the "USB>" prompt in mtty issue the command "writeasset 4150 eng" . The command would succeed. This command would fail if I didn't do step 4 above, apparently step for unlocks the portion of the rom that writeasset needs to write to.
6. To exit brick mode and return to normal Windows CE operation of h4150 issue the command "g 8C091580" (works for BootLoader v1.04H, if you have v1.05H you should use "g 8C0914B8" instead). h4150 does a hard reset and you have the original system back with all data and programs lost BUT the asset info is now correct. Model ID: hp iPAQ h4150 and Language: ENGLISH.
7. Restablish a partnership with ActiveSync. Execute the ROM upgrade. This time it recognizes laguage and model ids and installs without errors. h4150 reboots into the new ROM, factory new
Hope this helps somebody, it drove me nuts until I figured it out looking all over the net.
