Geekzone Review of GoToMyPC

Geekzone has posted a review of GoToMyPC software for Pocket PCs. The software allows users remotely connect to their PC from a pocket pc. Remotely logging in gives you the power of a real windows machine from your PPC....... I think this application screams for a VGA device.. Very nice review by Geekzone editor Mauricio Freitas... Give it a read!
The Pocket PC can be used to access corporate or private e-mail, write small reports, and more. And when needed, the Pocket PC can also be used to access the computer back at work or home to perform some tasks that require more power or access to an internal network not accessible from the Internet. For example, an user receive an e-mail on her Pocket PC with a Microsoft Visio diagram attached. She can't open it on the handheld, but there's a way to connect to the office computer, start Microsoft Outlook, and open the Visio diagram attachment. In short, working on Visio from the Pocket PC. Or any other application running on the host computer, really.
Conclusion:
After using the service for a while I was hooked. I realised how much I can do on my computer while away. For example start a backup to an external hard drive, a virus scan or access my personal files whenever I need them. I'm actually getting used to having my desktop at home powered on during the day, while in the office. I can recommend this solution if you need this kind of access too .

I tried this out a while back and it is very nice. But I had a real problem getting around the $20/ month or $180/ year for this service.

Haven't read the review yet. But I was wondering what advantages GoToMyPC has over the free Remote Desktop feature built into XP Professional, or even freeware VNC? <--- yeah I know VNC sends unencrypted passwords, but still....

Can you use that with a PPC? I wasn't aware that you could.

Or someone saying they are using a 56k dialup.

I use remote desktop all the time on my PPC - especially for customer support issues. We use it at the longshore hall to work on the computers that run the big screen displays... It does the job even on my old 3950 - I should use it at my house, wonder why I never thought of that ... my room where I am all the time is on the lower level (my home theatre) and the office is on the ground floor and they always call me to fix their problems, then my kids rooms are on the top level above the master level... could save me some stair walking...

Hey knelson,
Do you know if it's possible to change the port of the Pocket Terminal Server client? It defaults to something like 6174 or whatever and I've never figured out if there is a way to change it to something else.

Oi! there's naffin wrong with dial up mate . I might not have 56k (instead I've got ISDN with a blistering 64k, which uncannily seems like 33.6k ).
I haven't yet got around to BB as the phone cabling was only recently installed in the area where I live and I'm still trying to talk someone else in to paying for it.
I'm considered a speed phreak by some of my peers, I'll have you know .

The problem with VNC is that you have to open some ports on your firewall, and if you're in a big company this is difficult. Also your computer will be listening for incoming connections and people can scan your ports to see if anything is. If it is just a signature check will tell then it's VNC, and from there to get into your computer is just a few minutes.
When using GoToMyPC your computer connects to their servers, and the client connect to their servers. The computer never actually gets out there on the Internet. Way safer...

I don't even have a modem or floppy drive on my desktop
But GPRS is not much better than dialup in terms of speed . It's only cool because it's wireless

Free remote PDA access

I've been a gotomypc user for about six months and have been relatively satisfied with the service. Then last week I read about a free product that does exactly the same thing- logmein. Fortunately I am on the monthly plan with gotomypc, so cancelling was relatively easy. The logmein free product is a bit hidden on the website (I believe it is still in Beta). If you look at the bottom on the logmein.com home page, you see the link to the free product on the left side. Logmein works great with my pda and I also use it to access my home pc from my office pc.

The personal version is free, https://secure.logmein.com/go.asp?page=purchase lists prices for Pro version at $12.95 a month.
I might give a try to check it out.
