Sprite Software Updated to Version 3.0

Sprite software has just updated their leading backup solution for Pocket PCs. Sprite Backup 3.0 has just been released. The newly released version 3.0 of Sprite Backup features 'Basic' mode, simplifying the backup process even more, as well as streamlined remote backup.
According to their forum there won't be a charge to upgrade from the 2.x versions

I understand that most apps like this have to be installed to the main memory otherwise some information cannot be backed up (or something similar).
Am I right in thinking that if you use an app like this to back up your device and then have to perform a hard reset while out n about on the road, that your gonna be pretty stuck to reinstall the backup. As you would've just wiped the backup installation software?
Unless of course you really are pessimistic and backed up a cab file etc of the app to a storage card to be re-installed .

I've got a cunning plan, maybe. I'm new to PPC, 10 years of Palm, but from what I can tell, the iPAQ file store on my 4155 will survive a hard reset. I installed v. 3 there and it seems happy. I've backed up to the card and to the pc without any problems. It also has PIM mirroring that is supposed to back up contacts, datebook, tasks to iPAQ file store so they will restore instantly. I have done partial restores, but haven't had the pleasure of a hard reset yet

Sprite Backup does two things well and I recommend you use them for ease of recovery in time of pain. In backup options turn on "stop processes before backup". This insures all programs are stopped and no ke files are locked for copying.
The other setting addresses the scenario mentioned above and you need to restore on te road. Set Sprite to create a self restoring header and each backup file is an EXE file that you just click to restore your whole system- no Sprite program needed.

Hey, I hadn't realized that! You learn something every day!

I just ran into a little difficulty with Sprite Backup and thought I'd pass it on in case it helps.
First of all, a plea to Sprite and all other s/w developers. Please don't change the name of your program many versions into it's life. I had difficulty installing this new version because they changed the name from Pocket Backup to Sprite Backup. This meant a total uninstall of the old version before installing the new one. This was complicated since I had Backup Premium or Pro. I forgot about the Pro utilities, Space Detective and PocketMon and didn't uninstall those. They didn't work with the new install so I had to uninstall all 3 programs and then the new. Just because of the name change.
Second, and more seriously, I performed a backup with the Advanced options which is the same interface as the older version. Worked as expected after I set all the backup options just like I prefer. After that I decided to try the Basic options which is just a Backup button and a Restore button. I figured it would use the options already set. BIG MISTAKE.
The backup started and soon gave me an error that there wasn't enough space on the backup destination because it wasn't using my options as set. It was backing up to the Flash ROM drive which only has about 30 mb free and my backup is 60mb+. I hit OK at the error which in the earlier versions would return me to the backup window. Instead it appeared to be backing up anyway and ran until it said it completed. Once done it did it's soft reset as usual.
When the device came back up I realized with horror that what I thought was the backup was in fact a RESTORE of a previous backup file. I don't even know which one! My PIM databases were totally out of sync, programs I had installed in the last two weeks were gone, and file synchronization in Activesync now loops endlessly with 5 files going unresolved indefinitely.
I had to hard reset my device and return to the last backup I had performed 4 days ago.
It's entirely possible that I wasn't paying attention before it did the restore. I have used this program for years and know it inside and out and even if I hit a button I shouldn't have it still shouldn't go from a backup error to a restore with one click.
I am not a happy camper with Sprite. There is no way the program should fail to use configuration options set specifically by the user.

Have you managed to resolve it yet!

Yes, I hard reset and restored a backup from 4 days ago. At least it was a known factor.

I gotta say some of the PPC (and even Pc) apps make we wonder about their time saving and convenience aspects :? .
How many times have you Addicts installed an app only to spend 2-3 times longer sorting out the errors and bugs it caused?
Do you regularly find yourself taking precautionary measures for your security, backup or 'time saving' applications? Just in case it develops a 'bug'.
Do you find yourself spending the time you should have saved, searching for the latest updates?
Or do you find yourself carrying more PPC accessories now than a few years ago, just so you can use the latest apps or features?
Until recently I went through a phase of writing databases, so that I could organise my work better. Half the time the databases took longer to administrate than if' I'd done the work with paper and pen (probably more a comment on my database writing abilities than anything else ).
I don't propose to have the answers to these questions, but I've certainly got some questions???
