The Origin of The Term "Bluetooth"

When I first heard about this brand-new networking technology called "Bluetooth" that was being installed in Pocket PCs, cellphones and other gadgets, I thought "what kind of name is that?!?!" Are they naming this wireless technology after a pirate or something? The word bluetooth, brings about a cartoonish image that really seems silly.
Well, browsing around tonight, I found a link dedicated to explaining Bluetooth technology, application and history of the name. Not quite as goofy as I had originally thought, but silly just the same.
"Bluetooth is named for Tenth Century Danish king Harald Blåtand, (pronunciation) known in English as Harold Bluetooth Gromson, who is reputed to have been so fond of blueberries that his teeth were stained blue. The Bluetooth symbol is a bindrune that combines the runes for Harald Blåtand's initials — "h" looks like an asterisk."

That is silly...but a cool fact, nonetheless.

What he fails to explain is why they decided to use this King's name in this technology.
Fact is that King Harald was responsible for the unification of some nordic kingdoms under a single command. So, what better name for a technology that unites different devices under a single command?

Thanks for that tidbit freitasm - you explained it all in a sentence.

Hmmm! this Harry Bluetooth fella sounds a little like King Arthur :? , in so much as uniting the country under one command, knights of the round table and all that.
Jeez! just be pleased that someone didn't pick that name first. a 21st Century (almost) technology for handheld devices called 'Arthur' now that would've been sad .
Still the interconnectivity of various computing platforms and devices is a bit of a holy grail, although presently it's seems to be coming together nicely (apologies for the pun )

While we're on the subject of Bluetooth. . .
Are there any cool Bluetooth phones that are worth having? I can get a BT kit for my car that allows the phone to work off it. Then, I guess I'd have to trade in my Axim for the BT one.

If you have a kit, then it probably uses the handsfree profile... So don't get the Sony Ericsson P800/P900 because they don't support this profile.

Judging by your Avatar you need a bluetooth radar detector.
