Every now and again I waiver on getting an Apple iPod. The reason is I like music and want to listen to it while I'm on the go. However the main drawback to this purchase is that I already own a Pocket PC, which has the capability of playing music built into the OS. Both devices have their drawbacks. The iPod costs some decent money and is buggy for some people - but it plays music and plays it well. The Pocket PC plays WMA music format and most MP3 encodes, but space is limited to the storage card and it isn't completely DRM compatible with a MusicMatch or Napster download service.
The same type of question could be asked of digital cameras. What is better? A stand alone digital camera or a Pocket PC with camera built in?
Simon Guest has explored this issue in his weblog as well and doesn't really give a clear cut answer, however sort of points in the direction of Pocket PCs being a pretty good One-stop solution for a whole load of problems. "While in Japan last week I thought it time to brush up on the little Japanese that I do know by buying an electronic translator. If you have never been, you?ll find a wide collection of electronic translators in most of the electronic stores in Tokyo. About the size of a large calculator, these devices let you enter an English word and will suggest a number of Japanese translations (and of course, vice versa).
After exhaustive research and having found a particularly nice Seiko model that seemed to boast the features I wanted, I was on the verge of parting with Y19,800 (just under $200) for this little gadget, and I was almost to the point of approaching the salesman when it struck me. Err? What am I buying here? What?s my $200 really going to get me?
I concluded that once we discount the packaging and the manuals, I?m buying some hardware (a nice compact translator) and some software (the stuff that actually does the translation, built into the machine). After pondering on this (and maybe it was an admission of guilt about how much I?d been spending on gadgets recently<g>) I realized that not too long ago I had purchased a Pocket PC. Surely, there must be some English-Japanese software I could buy for this device? After all, I?d already invested in the hardware?"
So what do you think? Is a number of stand alone devices the way to go? Or do you prefer one gadget that solves all sorts of problems???
I prefer one device that solves all sorts of problems as long as it solves them well. I do not want a phone with a tiny pda screen. I do not want a pda with a hands free only phone or a big screen held to my ear. I have no use for a limited function camera to replace my Canon G5. I admit there are times a limited camera has uses as an emergency backup. I do see good use as music player, GPS, Multi-remote, as well as all the usual functions including the above mentioned dictionaries, PIMs, games, organizers, Bibles, books, limited movie viewing, wireless surfing,etc...
Well, I'm probably not one to ask. I have a 40 gb ipod. Why? Well the 1900 songs are one reason plus I back up my laptop's hard drive to it so I can always rebuild it while traveling. I actually did this in CompUSA once due to a laptop drive problem and blew their reps away.
I don't ever want a camera built into my PPC. I would not be able to bring it into many client sites due to camera restrictions. And you can't bring it into many popular events that restrict cameras. And I positively feel naked without my PPC.

I prefer multiple devices myself....because technology advances at different rates for different devices....If I buy a PPC today but next year I want the latest and greates Digital Camera...I don't want to have to buy a whole new PPC...but as far as music goes...I'm okay with using the PPC..

You need both right now bro.
Until the PPC gets more storage, its a no brainer. Go give Steve Jobs some money.
You'll love that little gadget.
I love mine. :P
