Buyer Beware: How The Different SD Cards Measure Up

A commentary over at Aximsite called Important Info. on Secure Digital Card Performance assesses the hundreds of SD card reports submitted by Pros and end-users alike. The results are pretty startling, considering the numbers of "bad" SD cards out there According to the article, a very large percentage of the bad ones are being made in Taiwan and China.
"Made in Japan
See a pattern? These numbers are not taken from a simple random sample, but they are the best quantitative data we have. In addition to being problem-biased, the sample is also affected by the proportion of types of cards out there—some card sizes and brands are more popular than others, distorting the proportion of card type reported. A true simple random sample would simply take 500 cards of every brand and every size and test them. Obviously certain conclusions cannot be supported at all, especially those related to the sub-populations of various capacity (or brand) cards."

I would hold off

Ahhhhh.....on my second leg of "the all day meetings from h&**" just arrived in Phila from NY and set my wake up call for 3:30am to head out to Chicago....Looks like snow is in the forecast for Chicago so I'll probably be spending alot of time in O'Hare tomorrow afternoon watching movies on my PPC...
I would definetly NOT purchase a 256MB card and wait for a good deal on a 512MB card ....I post deals for 512MB cards for about $120.00 and it is definetly worth the extra space! (I watched Seabiscuit today ...awesome movie.....tomorrow either "Thirteen", "Spellbound" or "Capturing the Friedman's") (and I bill out hourly for this? )

It is a good article but, unfortunately, has not scientific evidence to support it.

I don't know where a lot of people are getting their memory, but I bought a 128 SD sandisk over a year ago and have never had a single problem with it. I'll be picking up a 512 soon tho

I've been reading a lot about SD cards.
And many that have failed reported that they have been 'frequently' taking the card in and out of the slots, between card readers, cameras etc.
*Shrugs* about what is their definition of 'frequently', but I personally do it maybe once every 2-3 days perhaps.
Maybe need someone to do a 'robust' in-out of slot endurance test and see if it dies
