Question Battery Life Maintenance

Hi All,

Newbie Pocket PC user here, not an addict quite yet but working on it! Thanks for the great site, done plenty of reading and downloading so far and enjoying it.

I've had my iPAQ rw6828 for 3 days now and loving it, great little package, have installed a neat digital clock and decent alarm manager, also heaps of cool themes which work well, message alerts were a bit of a worry till I figured out WM5 looks for .wav files and not .mp3, so did a bit of file conversion and now can use my favourite tones!

One question about good battery maintenance though, should I leave my unit charging at all times when I'm not using it or should I only recharge it fully once I allow the battery to get low?

Any other tips you have on keeping the battery longevity at it's best would be much appreciated!

Thanks,

Matt

I typically recharge my device overnight. Not knowing much about your device's battery consumption makes it hard for me to say whether or not you should let the battery run down or not.

You also may want to make sure that you don't have any unnecessary applications running in the background, as this will drain your battery faster, as well as consume additional memory.

Ok, so you run yours down during the day and then charge it overnight, that obviously works for you, but would your battery be better off if it was kept on charge when possible during the day while not being used? These are the questions i'm pondering, i'm supposing it requires a more technical answer?

I realise this, i've done my homework on lowering battery consumption, am just concerned about the recharging fundamentals of these pocket pc's. Thanks for your input!

when i got my old flip phone about 3 years ago before i got my tilt, the man i got it from said that to make sure the battery stays at its full potential you should drain it down till the phone turns off then charge it all the way back to the top once a month or so.

i havent had my tilt long enough to notice any changes in battery length but i have been doing this with my tilt. i dont know if he was full of hot air or what but it seemed to work for that phone... because this phone costs a considerable amount more than my other phone if i noticed my battery starting to shit the bed i would probably just buy a new one...

when you got something nice you gotta keep it nice :-\

I've heard that before, it makes sense to me to do that. I've also read on here somewhere that allowing the battery to run very low too often is not good for it...hmmm?

Pity the manual that came with my unit doesn't have the answer I'm looking for, it's so basic and doesn't go into any depth at all with the hardware or software, only the bare bones functions.

Well there was a study done (informally of course) some months back and it was found that if you charge your device whenever you had the chance would make it last longer compared to only charging when it's almost dead.

Thanks for that. I think i'll do my own private study and keep it on charge as often as possible but drain it once a month then fully recharge it in one sitting, i guess at the end of the day the thing is going to last me at least a year or two or more before it completely dies and by that time i'll probably have upgraded my device, that's if i get addicted to them! Ha

Lithium Ion batteries do not have charge memory and can be recharged as often as you want....it is best, though, to recharge before the battery reaches 20% full.

I am no expert (but I am a know it all). I have had good luck with the "just charge it overnight". This doesn't work when using things like GPS or watching videos.

Yes i read that somewhere also.

Well my unit just died on low battery, then reconnected it to the charger, took a while to start up again and was on 2% battery...not sure if i'm happy about that happening again too often, not even a low battery warning, it just konked out?

Thanks for the input so far peeps, it all helps.

Hey all. Another tip I've heard is for the those batteries not of the lithium ion variety (and of the removeable type), to reset the charge memory, once the battery is flat, place it in the freezer overnight and charge up fully the next day. Works quite well..
