Unhappy Please Help.

I recently purchased a Cingular 8125 off of ebay and when i recieved it all was well. then I turned the phone off because I wanted to look at the battery because the black casing was beginning to crack and when I went to turn it back on it would not recognize my sim and turn on the phone, just device. I performed a software hard reset "clear storage" to see if that would help and now it will not get past the cingular first screen when turned on. I am wondering if it is possible that since the battery casing is broken and coming off, and I tried to recharge it and it was still showing the orange charge light 8 hours later, could this problem be fixed by a new battery. or is there another option?

well when you perform a hard reset you have to set up the device it should be stuck at a screen that says "tap screen to set up device"

Battery?

Could the battery be the reason it will not go to a screen asking me to set up device?
