Syncs them to what? Are you just looking to back them up? If so you could back them up to a SD card. If you have a program you want to use them with, what is it? For example you canget a sync program that works with Lotus Notes, but you would have to have and want to use Lotus Notes.
Unless you are really sure you will never need A/S I think you want to get that working.
Which program are you trying to sync them with on your computer? If its Outlook just open it make sure its working properly then when you sync your device to create a partnership it will ask you to setup outlook for you device just follow the directions.
Now I hate Outlook so what I use is my Windows live account. Just create one if you havent already, then go to your hotmail account and add all your contacts. I took all mine from Yahoo, google, ect. and stuck them there. Now on your device setup Windows Live it will ask you to sync your contacts do that. Now you have all your contacts on your Windows Live account so if you ever need to sync your contacts will be there.
Yet another way is to use a exchange server but I cant help you there.

yeah setup windows live on your device it will ask for your hotmail account then it will sync your hotmail contacts and vise versa.
