8125 vs 8525 Which to Purchase?

There are some good buys on the 8125 with a 2 year commitment from now at&t. The 8525 costs more. Would you opt for the 8125 or the 8525? I do not want a data plan because I hope to use the phone with its WiFi function to access the internet and e-mail, etc.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Do you plan on purchasing from the Cingular/AT&T website? If so, the 8125 isn't even listed. I only see the 8525 for $299.99 with rebate (signing up for data plans, etc...).

You're right. AT&T has taken off the website the 8125 ($79 refurb) and $99 (new). Also there is no refurbished 8525. I guess I waited too long. I have a call into AT&T but their office does not open until 12:00 noon.

Could be a day late ...

Thanks for your response.

8125 vs 8525

I just got off the phone with an at&t rep. The 8125 is still available - refurbished - $79.00. There is no new 8125 available. The 8525 (new) is available at $299.00 with a 2 year contract.

I am basically interested in the WiFi capabilities of the 8125/8525. Would I be wise to purchase the 8125 refurbished or go for the new 8525? The iPhone is an option too, but it sure is costly.

Thoughts please.

Thanks,

dave

I'd go for an 8525 over the iphone any day. I believe the $299 price tag is only if you use the $100 rebate that requires you to sign up for certain plans. I could rant all day about the iphone, but I won't.
To me, a phone simply isn't worth $299, so I went with the refurbished 3125 for $29.99. It should arrive towards the end of the week. I would always worry about breaking a phone like that of the 8125 and 8525. Wifi simply wasn't worth $270 to me. I guess I'll be waiting another 2 years for that feature on a phone.

Personally I would go with 8525, I've owned both (8125 for a week) returned It was slow & buggy at the time I bought it. It was my first ppc so it left a bad impression toward ppc's.
I just got my 8525 almost 2 weeks ago. I can say it is very nice. There are features on it I will never use thats for sure. Basically it's a phone with a keyboard for me. No business use, pdf, power point, etc are of no use to me. I use the wi-fi over cingulars edge (no 3g here) I like touch screen, the call quality is great loud & clear. I would go with newer than older technology.

If you want to save some money go to amazon.com print the page they sell it for 199.99, then go to your local cingular store have them price match.

Smile The question is ... what do you want in a WM phone?

I have been using CE/Windows Mobile based phones for a few years (Hitachi G1000 on Sprint and most recently the Siemens SX66 on Cingular). I just switched to the 8525 and I am really, really impressed by the device. The 8125 is older and will not get the upgrade to WM6 that has been promised for the 8525. Since the 8525 is a fairly recent introduction, support should be around for a few years. Try it, you will like it!!!

if your not going to use the phone to its full use (no data plan, no 3G, etc.) then just go with the 8125...but if you want to pimp it out and really use your phone (my phone can do it all, voice commands, tv, radio, internet, AIM, games galore, etc)...if you just want a phone just for the phone and some other goods then go with the 8125, but if you wanna really use it splurge a little and go with the 8525.

Within the next week it will be the 8525 or there is a slim chance that it could be an iPhone for me. If I have to get the a data plan to get the best price (a rebate), I have been told I can cancel the data plan at anytime. Here's my question. Will the WiFi work in hotspots without having to do anything to the 8525 settings?

Wifi should work fine, however you might want to delete the Medianet connections to be safe. I believe you can also registry edit some things to disable other services and avoid possible accidental data access.

thats a good idea...i was pondering on the data plan or not and i asked cingular if i just used my wireless, could i completely turn off medianet or all of their internet services to avoid any accidental charges and they said no...but of course they would say that.. if you can edit the registry to avoid them, and just use wifi, thatd be very smart. as long as you have your wifi on whenever there is a hotspot near it connects, and theres also wififom or somethin like that which is free i believe and you can get it on here which locates nearest wifispots, i dont use it cuz i have the unlimated plan but thats a nice piece if your just using wifi.

I'm still pondering the 8525 vs the iPhone. I have to determine the costs of the data/voice plans with each. If I read the information correctly about the iPhone. For $59.00/month with the iPhone you get 450 minutes with unlimited data. I have over 1400 rollover minutes with AT&T so I don't need more than 450 minutes. My current plan has 550 minutes for which I pay around $50/month without a data plan.

Off to an AT&T store in a short.
