Is there any built-in tool - or a config file that can be edited - that can be used from within the WIN PPC 2003 interface itself to hide an icon that appears within the "system tray"?
It depends on the app. Many have a choice in their own options settings whether or not to display a tray icon. Tweaking apps like Tweaks2k2 allow you to turn off some OS access icons in order to control security. What apps are you trying to deactivate from tray display?

The device is actually a Symbol Tech/Motorola MC9060 hand-held warehouse scanner/keypad computer running Win PPC 2003.
The application in question is the Symbol Mobile Companion wireless application.
Trying to hide the icon as it allows someone to tap it open and then futtz with the network settings of the hand-held. Not good.
Only way I've heard of being able to hide the icon is to dump the registry via Remote Regedit, edit it, then activesync it back in(?).
Please pardon in advance but this is my first exposure to Win PPC and I'm stunned that there are no "onboard" regedit tools or "ini" or config files that can be adjusted by someone to lock a PPC down.
If you can run standard WM apps on your device, you will find a number of registry editors on sites like pocketpcfreewares.com or freewarepocketpc.net, PHM's editor getting fairly good reviews as a stand-alone app (not bundled in a larger file manager). Always exercise caution when editing your registry as you can leave yourself with a dead device by making incorrect changes to keys.
