Going in circles with my 8125 Wifi! Argh!

Oookay, well, I'm a noob, never used wifi before in my life, so, ofcourse, I'm having issues with my connection. Please bare with me, I've gone through a bunch of threads on here, but no one has specifically answered my questions...

I've deleted Cingular & Media Net GPRS options (they wouldn't work anyway in Canada) - the phone is unlocked, have it running on the Fido network here in Canada with a pay as you go sim (although I don't think that makes a difference)

Okay, so first I turn WIFI on. Then a simply tried to type in a website and it gave me the message "Can not connect with the current connection settings, tap settings" which I did - Then is shows the following:

MY ISP name
Add a new modem connection
set up my proxy server

My Work network
Add a new modem connection
Add a new VPN server connection
set up my proxy server

I have no idea what to do here.. then, a box pops up that says "Unable to obtain a server assigned IP address. Try again later or enter an IP address in network settings" - i have no idea about that either..

Next another box pops up with a few random servers I guess they are, some require a key, some don't so I picked one that didn't - nothing happened.. and now I'm stuck..

Am I just dumb and missing something? Everything else seems pretty straight forward! Maybe setting something up wrong? or in the wrong order?

It is because these random servers I'm connecting to aren't 'hotspots'? I haven't tried it at a starbucks yet, should I try that? I really have no idea what I'm doing - I live in a very busy part of a major city, so it should be no problem connecting on a free connection..

Can anyone guide me through this? Please reply here! I also have msn (on my PC) if you have a second, PM me for the address. Thanks!!

You are probably not getting connected to the hotspot. Once you turn on the wifi, go to settings/connections tab/network cards. This will show the networks that you are trying to connect to. Don't try to go to the internet until the top network says "connected". Only then are you truly connected.
