Question Cingular 8125 Wifi Connection

Ok, so I know this is probably the billionth (is that even a word?) posting for wifi issues with the 8125. The mother of all questions is how to set up wifi on the 8125 and make certain you are never connecting through any of cingular's services. The key here is to not be charged for any connectivity.

Just so you know, I called cingular last night and had them totally disable all internet connectivity through cingular. Because of all my troubles with cingular (don't get me started) the rep even made notes that if there are ANY connectivity charges on my next bill, they will be removed AND I will get a $25 credit. Woopty doo! If they gave credits for all the problems their customers had they'd have gone bankrupt long ago. Sorry, don't mean to make this a gripe session...it's just a sore spot.

So, now that cingular has supposedly disabled internet on my account I have been connecting to the internet through what I think is wifi but whenever I actually open internet explorer and try to go to a website, it says it is connecting to cingular GPRS....doesn't that mean I'm going to incur charges through cingular? Didn't I already say I called them and they assured me it was disabled??? Yep, I thought so!

If someone who is knowledgable on this could actually walk me through, step by step on how to delete the settings for all of cingular's connections and ONLY have connections for wifi I would sooooo appreciate it. Thanks so much!

Sorry if I sound dumb but this is my first pocket pc and it's a bit different navigating through WM vs. XP or Vista.

I had the same problem. Here's what I did, and I think it has worked:
Go to Start > Settings. Tap on the Connections tab. Now tap on Connections. Tap on Manage Existing Connections. Highlight Cingular GPRS. Tap on Edit. Now tap on Next. Erase the Access point name. Tap Next. Erase the Username and Password. Tap Finish.

That should do it. Let me know how it works out for you.

There is no "manage existing connections" on my phone. I have the following:

Beam
Bluetooth
Connections
CSD Line Type
GPRS Setting
Network Cards
Wireless Lan

Not sure why mine is different though...

tap on connections. the next screen should give you the manage existing settings option. then, on the next screen, the easiest thing to do is just tap and hold on Cingular GPRS, then choose "delete."

heh

Well, deleting the GPRS feature wont help you either. I've done it. :P

I have deleted it and when I open IE, or even when I connect my ppc to my pc, it says, "Connecting to GPRS..." The best thing you can do it click cancel, or yet that I ahve found.

If im correct, though, GPRS goes by kbs of usage. if you open IE and it connects to GPRS it should not charge you until you go to a site. If you connect to Wifi first then open IE you should be ok. But to insure that you arn't on Cingulars rip-off line, you can always click the coconut looking thing at the bottom right of your ppc and if the PPC looking thing with 2 arrows is green (means GPRS is activated) then click on it to grey it out. But then again, at the top right of your ppc where it shows the connections icon...

If there are two big arrows That means your connect to the internet through ActiveSync (no charge)

A pole with the circle around the top with two little arrows means your connected to Wifi.

And finally, The little E with two little arrows on bottom means you're connected (or trying to connect) to GPRS.

So its fairly easy to tell.

If you do find a way to disable it completly please, do tell

I called cingular and asked to be transferred to their "Advanced Network Support" dept. and they went through the settings with me but since they do not support wifi they transferred me to HTC, the manufacturer of the device. I thought that was pretty cool instead of just telling me I was SOL and needed to contact HTC myself. The first time anyone at Cingular has taken any sort of owership or initiative.

I did get wifi to work but can't remember all the settings since I tried so many. HTC did tell me that the device is very simple in terms of wifi settings and there are some routers it has difficulty connecting to. Especially if you have alot of different security settings. So, I have a linksys wireless router (which is also for my Vonage service) and it is set to WPA-Preshared Key, and so I had to setup the 8125 to connect and entered the network key, etc. All the times I had been trying to connect to wifi before, it was never actually connected (always said "connecting") and so anytime I went to open a browser it would try to connect to GPRS because it wasn't even connected to wifi. I've familiarized myself with the device a little more and discovered that just because you turn wifi on, doesn't mean it will actually connect to anything. Anyhow, HTC was very helpful and stayed on the phone with me for as long as it took. The rep I talked to was even going to research my router model more thoroughly and get back to me. I have heard back yet and that was last thursday so we'll see. Anyhow, it does work and I have been able to connect to wifi outside of my own home network as well.

As I think I said before, I did have cingular disable all points of access on my account so that there would be no possibility of accidentally connecting through cingular.

It just takes a little time to familiarize yourself with the device and how things work. I'm still within my 30 day period when I can return the device. I like it, but it's a little big for me having used a razr before. I think I will probably get used to it and more than likely keep it.

Yeah, I found that my 8125 just has trouble connecting to wifi hotspots. Period. Particulary my school one, which does WPA-PSK. I'm also pretty sure (though I could be wrong) that it doesn't connect to Wireless G routers? I know the 8525 does, as far as my reading has said...

As for disabling...Have you tried this?

Start (Button) --> Settings (Menu Item) --> Connections (Tab) --> Connections (Icon) --> Advanced (Tab) --> Select Networks (Button) and then in dropdown menu under "Programs that automatically connect to the Internet should connect using:" and selected "My Work Network" or "My ISP" instead of "MEdia Net"?

I switched the one below also to My Work Network, and whenever I hit Internet Explorer, It always tells me I cannot connect (Because I can't find a bloody working wifi in any of the areas I'm in.). However, it WILL NOT connect to the EDGE/GPRS Network, which makes me happy.

Also, the symbol on top that represents the cell phone internet can be either an E or a G. G represents the GPRS, which is the older cell phone internet, and is often found outside of cities or in small towns. E represents EDGE, which is just an upgraded GPRS, and is often found in decent-sized cities.

Of course, I'm using this at the moment because I need to subscribe to two months to actually get my rebate ($80 total cost for 2 months... $100 rebate... Heh... there goes the rebate :P)

Edit: Oh yeah, now I remember where I read all this, From TIM, of course: http://www.pocketpcaddict.com/forums...html#post38601

Thanks Tim! Sorry to almost copy what you said for my own

Hey, everyone. Hopefully this will be of some help. I'm not too sure if I'm allowed to post links to software but here it goes.

Turn off GPRS auto connect application at BenRichards.co.uk

That's a program that lets you toggle GPRS connection on and off. It seems to be pretty useful. I haven't tried it myself yet. It says it works with the XDA Orbit. I'm pretty sure it should work with the 8125 (getting mine in the mail tomorrow). If you'd like, I can post back here tomorrow and let you know if it works.

I'm new to the whole pocket pc thing. Sorry!

A little thing that nobody mentions.....

There is one tiny little step that nobody ever mentions when talking about connecting via WiFi. I followed every step described above configuring my wifi and after about an hour pulling my hair out, I noticed something... It doesn't matter how you configure your wireless, you'll never connect until you turn it on. I feel like an idiot, there is a button on the "comm manager" page, looks like an antenna. Your wi-fi won't do anything until you click it and activate it. The button on the top right corner, right above the volume slider takes you to the "comm manager".
Now, I'm surfing cyberspace baby!
Hopefully my case of momentary stupidity will save someone else an hour of hair pulling. (unless you're into that kinda thing, then have at it...)
