How to disable GPRS WAP?

It's probably been asked a million times before, but I want to disable GPRS/WAP access from my phone. I have an RSS reader that updates using Active Sync, and occasionly while reading the feeds away from my PC, it automatically connects to WAP.

Very annoying. This would be OK if I had a decent plan, but I don't, so I'm trying to figure out how to stop it completely.

Thanks for your help, i've been googling for a few days now, nothing seems to help!

Ok this might solve the issue go into settings then select the connection tab. Then go into gprs settings and switch it, if its set on Chap then select Pap and vise versa. Then when you need to access the internet just switch it back. Keep me posted and if this doesnt work I have another thaught.

Doesn't Work for me. Any other ideas as to how to deactivate gprs or any tips on what exactly could be the cause? Thanks in advance.

Well im under M1 which is a local service provider. uses sunsurf gprs. A temporary solution would be useful.

I know of only a few reasons why it auto connects. 1 would be setting email to auto receive every so and so minutes/hrs/once per day and so on. Iv set it to receive mail once a day.

Another is updating weather which you can do via wifi so no problems there.

So a few questions would be,
1)why does it still auto connect to gprs sometimes even when im already connected via wifi? Especially so when I log in to msn. -_- It's pretty confusing and doesn't make sense to me at all. Have to soft reset my ppc to totally close windows live and msn before gprs stops auto connecting.
and 2) I read somewhere GPRS isn't charged even if its on unless there is dl/ul traffic? Just wana double confirm.

Yeah so thats about it for me. If there is a way to temporarily block gprs that would be pretty helpful.

PS: Pardon any noobie talk as this is my first ppc and I never paid too much attention to phones before.

ok one more final thought that should solve any issues one might be having with wifi connecting to a proxy server that i overlooked. if you install this awsome software called battery status you can go into options and under tools you can select "disable proxy for Wifi" and this should keep your device from going throught your gprs settings for connecting to the internet.

enjoy this all around great program

Hi I tried method 1, but whenever I uncheck "this network connects to the internet" and press ok it will automatically tick that option again. I might be doing something wrong though.

Anyways while there i tempered a bit and came up with a solution which is pretty simple.

Under settings>connections>manage connections and under the modem tab creat a "dummy" modem. (fittingly called dummy) Selected it instead of "auto pick" and now it won't auto connect to gprs but it does have the "doesn't connect" bubble up over and over again. ah well. Maybe I'l use it when I idle.

Thanks so much for your help. I fully appreciate the time and effort you've taken to help me and probably others try to solve this.

Ok this seems to be a popular topic so I did some research and found a great helpfull cab that was developed by Paul (MVP) over at MoDaCo called MoDaCo NoData it is a cab file easy to install and it puts a shortcut in your programs file. Just select it and then it displays your connections and allows you to toggle between the two. You can download it from our server here.

Hello everyone,

Isn't there an easier way to just entirely disable GPRS?
My GPRS keeps connecting (while on Live Messenger with WLAN) and it's just annoying.
(I use HTC by the way, for the record)

T.

if you download the afor mentioned program "no data" it will show you all your connections and you can easily toggle the gprs on and off. So while you are using wlan you dont have to worry about it connecting.

I'm using No Data now and its solved all the hassle of setting things up myself. It's recommended for all who want control over your gprs. Thanks mate. This should be stickied for those people racking up the bills on gprs un knowingly.

Angry Darned GPRS!

Well, up until the last couple of months, my device only looked for a connection when I told it to. But now, the darned thing is doing it contantly! It happens overnight, every time I dock it, and even if I look at it funny. Any idea of why it's suddenly doing this! I had a 4mb plan that I never went over on, but lately I'm being charged about $20-$30 extra!

I've tried the "GB-SOFT Tweak" program but it's not doing the trick. The aforementioned program above only works with Windows Mobile 5. I'm still running on WM 2003 SE. What else can I try?

Also, speaking of WM5... Is there any upgrade for my type of device?

Thanks!

Debbie

Hi,

I'm not sure if anyone is getting the same problem as me, but I'd be very grateful for any help.

About 1 or 2 weeks ago my MDA Vario iii started to try to connect for no reason to GPRS. It would connect, and then I'd have to disconnect myself. Since then, it's been doing it more and more often, and now whenever I use the machine, browsing files, writing texts, even if the alarm rings, it will attempt to connect. And it can no longer successfully connect (even when I try to make it connect eg by opening internet explorer); it will just attempt to connect, seemingly fail, re-attempt, on and on and on. This makes it unusable, really. And I've noticed that often, just before it attempts this, a small envelope in a tray with an arrow appears in the bar at the top of the screen, and notification flashes up at the bottom of the screen, as though I have a text or something. The only way to stop these attempts are to put my phone in flight mode. I've downloaded nodata, and that stops the connection attempts, but I'm still getting the Notification flashes and the envelope sign very often.

I can't understand what has caused this problem, nor why it's getting worse. Thank you!
