Unhappy Can't transfer large files on Toshiba e355

Hello everyone,

I got a Toshiba e355 and a 256MB SD card on eBay. I'm having trouble copying a large file (a video to be exact) to the SD card. Here's what I'm doing:

I open up ActiveSync and click "Explore" I then browse to the "SD Card" folder and paste the file into the window. The "Copy & Convert" window appears and the progress bar slowly fills...after it gets maybe 1/3 of the way done, the progress bar resets! It does this continuously until I simply cancel it.

Toshiba is no help as they now charge for tech support...is there anything I can do? Should I simply get a card reader and copy it directly?

Any ideas would be great! Thanks a lot!

Well, I let it run for hours and it did finally finish. BUT, it said it was too big for the card!

So, how much space do I really have on a formatted 256MB SD card?

You will have roughly 244MB once it is formatted, measurements based on 1024 bits, not 1000. Manufacturers typically express the size in standard decimal (base 10) math. The formatted size varies somewhat depending on which file system is used, but you need to adjust calculations by using 1.024 instead of 1 as the basic unit. Your device's file system uses binary math when it looks at storage so if you check the properties of the card using a file explorer on either your device or your PC, the size reported will reflect this difference as it is carried up the line of bits and bytes. Then you will lose a small chunk of the formatted size to the basics of the file system, like the allocation table, so to get a better idea of the available storage after the card is formatted, divide the 256MB raw figure by 1.05 or 1.06, giving you 242-244MB of measured storage capacity.

This has been a gripe of hard drive buyers for years and the larger the storage, the larger the difference between the manufacturers' raw decimal-based size and the size as seen by the binary-based file system.

Something to keep in mind when trying to copy very large files to a memory card on your device through ActiveSync is that there are a number of bottlenecks. One is the speed of your AS connection. Another is that the process involves two different OSes communicating with each other. And finally is the speed that your device can write to the card. Any of these can slow the process to the point of a buffer or time-out error when attempting to transfer a very large file.

It is almost always a better option to write a large file to the card by using a card reader attached to your PC and then put the card back in your PPC.

Thanks for the replies! I just ordered a card reader, so that should help out a lot.

I checked the SD card from within the Pocket PC and it says there's only 220 MB available. There's nothing in the SD Card directory except for "ignore_my_docs" or something which is 0 bytes. Why is this?

It may be the FAT version or there may be some system files on it, which are generally hidden. It may also be related to the failed file-copy. I would suggest formatting again when you have your card reader. FAT16 format does not make as efficient use of storage space when dealing with small files but will probably give you better effective read and write performance on your PPC over formatting for FAT32.

Given the write speed of the e300 card slot, I would stick with a card reader. WM5torage will still be limited by the slot's relatively slow speed.

Are you sure that app works with WM for PPC? I took from the web site that it was developed for WM phone editions but I could be wrong. The Toshiba is a PPC, not a converged device.

Yeah, I don't like keeping the Pocket PC on for hours just to copy stuff, anyway.

Thanks again.
