How to free up Storage Memory?

Ok, Ive got a Cingular 8125, bought a 1gig memory stick, everything is great? Well, not really. Ive got lots of memory available on the memory stick, but only 4 mb of Internal Storage Memory in the PPC. I cant install any programs that I could use in the workplace, because I have so little internal storage mem, even though I direct the new programs to be installed onto the mem stick. Program installations still use internal storage memory. So my question is, how do I free up internal storage memory on the 8125, without having to remove existing programs? Would appreciate your help. Thanks.

Hello Wannabe Cowboy,

That is a good question. I just tried to extract a program on my 8125 and move it to my mem stick, and it didn't work. This leads me to conclude that you may have to delete the program and reinstall it to your mem stick.

G'luck.

Freeing up Internal Storage Memory

Everything Ive installed, Ive installed to the 1gig Memory Stick, each time sucking memory out of my internal storage memory as well. What I need to know is how to free up internal storage memory? I have been unable to get any solution to this problem, but I cant imagine that Im the only one owning a Cingular 8125 to run low on internal storage memory. There HAS to be a way to do this.

fire up activesync, click mobile in my computer, file explorer, copy programs and click storage card, paste programs to card. Then delete the programs in the internal memory. as long as the programs are on storage card they will run. also that way the programs can be used on other phones and devices. you need to hold the stylus on the programs to bring up the menus.

Wannabe, you will also find that internet explorer is a memory hog. Open up your browser and go to tools and delete files and check the results. I sure you'll find quite a difference in your storage memory.

You could benefit from Tweaks2k2, which provides a number of registry hacks to relocate things like the IE cache and inbox attachments to memory cards. There are many things that slowly eat up your RAM when they are left at their default locations.

Definitely look at MemMaid. It is great at finding all those memory corners that collect dust and slow your device down over time. It is probably the best all-around memory manager I have found.

A related, but different question (forgive my ignorance - very new to this) How do I get my phone to see the memory card? When I go to Settings, Memory, System, Storage Card, it says the card is not installed. I have inserted a 512Mb card into the slot on top of my phone, but it obviously does not see it (or it is not formatted)

Any suggestions please?

A couple of things to try quickly. First, do a soft reset of your device. Like your desktop PC, sometimes the RAM execution area gets disrupted and needs to be cleared out with the mobiile equivalent of a warm reboot. If that doesn't help, check the csrd using a card reader on a desktop computer to see if it is formatted using one of the file systems your device supports (FAT is always supported in both 16 and 32 varieties).

Let us know if you need more help.

Thanks for your response. I have done a soft reset, with no effect. I will try and find somebody with a card reader on their PC - i am not technically smart enough to own one The person who i bought the phone from said there is a ROM copied onto the card and i should format the card - only problem is the phone doesnt recognize the card

PPC 6700 device memory storage low

Hi, I'm not sure if this is where my question belongs (I just joined today) but I searched on "memory storage", read this string and the discussion relates to my problem. I've posted this problem on 2 other sites but no one has responded for about 5 days although a bunch of people have viewed. So here goes...

I've had my PPC6700 for about a year but still feel like a newbie about messing around with it. My storage memory always hangs out at around 13-14MB and I don't have a ton of stuff on the device. I always delete files after using internet explorer and I use Memory Maid as well. In fact, using Memory Maid, I've found that there are over 1300 files in the Windows folder taking up 60 mb. They include many many many small files. I sorted by type: this isn't a complete list but there are: 20 CABS, 50 applicatinos, 300 dlls, 250 bitmap images (for things like buttons in WMP and other apps), 125 DAT files, 75 GIF images, 75 HTMLs, and assorted MUI, NLP, PNG, PROVMXL, RGU, WAV and other sound files. Also some word templates. Largest fille is a 2mb powerpoint, smallest are some shortcuts, there are several 0 byte files that are in format "CAB__NG". I have no idea if all or any of this is junk or how to get rid of it.

Also, my PIM file is 9MB. Is this unusual?

Thanks.

izzyp i cant really help with your files other than to say delete what you at your own risk. now your PIM file is your contact info. thats the file that your contact app reads and writes to. if you have a lot of contacts and a lot of them have caller ID pictures or a lot of info within the contact your file will grow and can become quite large. me personally, i have about 240 something contacts with email addresses , multiple phone numbers, and ID pics and my PIM file is 4.6 MB.
oh and "that internet thing": go to IE tap menu, go to Options, "tools", "mem" and clear history and delete files. that will free up a lot of space if you've never done it before

thanks. I've deleted some unused files. I knew that the PIM file was contacts but I don't have pictures in there at all. I can't even tell you how many contacts I have, but there are plenty that are old. May delete some of those too. But I can't tell what a lot of the files I listed are all about.

Have been roaming around a bunch of diferent sites with this question. There's a compression program, UPX, that looks like it might be useful.
