How to change location of ActiveSync File Synchronization Folder

Jefferson Kim asks:

"Any of you know of a quick way to change where the "file synchronization" folder can be changed through ActiveSync?

Right now
I have it pointing to:

C:\Documents and Settings\Jefferson M. Kim\My Documents\Pocket_PC My Documents\

But I want it to point to
C:\Documents and Settings\Jefferson M. Kim\My Documents\JeffersonKim My Documents\

Unfortunately, it's greyed out and I can't change it myself. DOH!"

Excellent question! I've found the answer for you on another forum. Here is what Raj has to say from the Computer Hardware Forum:

You will need to make the changes in the registry if you want to change thetarget folder settings since Activesync will not allow you to do it. Since you are going to modify the Registry contents which is never supported by any of the manufacturers, it is recommended you backup the registry information using the File -> Export feature in the registry.

Step 1: Start the Registry Editor

Go to the start menu, then RUN, and type REGEDIT.

Step 2: Locate the synchronization key by navigating through the following folders.

-HKEY_CURRENT_USER
-Software
-Microsoft
-Windows CE Services
-Partners
- **********
-Services
-Synchronization

The ********** will be a string containing a combination of numbers and alphabets. If you have had several partnerships created, then you will find >1 entries here. You will need to identify the key containing the current partnership information. You can identify which string holds your current partnership information is by looking at the Briefcase Path key. It should display the synchronization folder, and will also your device name. This is the key we need to edit.

Double-click on the Briefcase Path key, and the key will load so you can edit it. Enter the name of the folder you want your device to sync to. Ensure you enter the correct path to the new folder you wish to target and insert \ at the end of it.

Step 3: Restart your computer.

After booting, when you synchronize your target folder would be the one specified by you. Now you can move the contents of the old folder and/or delete it.

If you want the short-cut on your Desktop to point to the new folder location, then you will need to edit the location by following the steps below:

* Right-click the short-cut pointing to the My Document synchronization folder and click Properties.
* Edit the Target location and point it to your new folder.

---

Let us know if it works for you!

-Tim

Hi

I also have the same problem, but I was able to change the path within My Documents. But I need to sync my files to a network drive. For instance "F:\pdafiles\", does anyone know how I can do this?

To expand file sync flexibility, you should take a look at MobSync. Version 0.9.4 is the most recent free release; with version 1.0 and later it has been made commercial software. You may find that the free version meets your needs but the commercial release continues to be updated. Its purpose is to allow you to sync files between any location on your PC (I think this includes network shares) and any location on your device. It works through the ActiveSync conduit and allows multiple jobs to be defined, a job being a sync between two locations.

Thanks for the info, Tim.

Do you know how I change where the synchronized files land on my device?

I would like to send the synch'd files to the storage card instead of the internal memery.

Thanks,
Rob

Easy Sync 2.8.6

I can't believe how pathetic some of the fundamental design flaws are with ActiveSync.

After reading this thread and a few others on the web it looks like there aren't any viable alternatives to Active Sync at present. There are however a lot of great little add-on apps out there that tweak or make available new features.

With regards to file synchronisation and choosing specific files / folders not restricted to your computers bloody deskop / my docs and specific location on your device, I have searched and come across the above Easy Sync. I haven't tried it yet, but looking at the page and its features, they seem to have it bang-on and I'm already convinced.

Have a read yourself. It looks like you can choose whatever files / folders you want on both your device and computer from any location. It also has a bunch of other great and relevant features.

I'll get back to this thread once I've had a play with it but this could be a while. I hope anyone who is looking for a solution finds this information useful.

All the best, and thanks for original thread questions and answers. I wouldn't have got this far without you guys

Once again, here's the link;

Easy Sync 2.8.6
