I have my 8125 and I connected to the wifi in my house... but no webpages will load, I get timeouts on everything... Some thread said go to Settings>Connections>Connections>Advanced and select WiFi but that option isn't there... as someone said it would be by default :O :O :O Help!
Also.. just curious, I had to make my MediaNet setting Cingular_GPRS instead of Cingular GPRS because my 8125 said that Cingular GPRS was already a named connection... so why can't I select it?
Aaaaaand, if I don't have the MediaNet connection set up the pda won't connect to the internet at all right? and right now it uses MediaNet as the default connection? Aaaand if I have WiFi set up it shouldn't use MEdiaNet then?
Oooooone more... If I use a program like AgileMessenger over MediaNet how does Cingular charge me for that?
Welcome to Pocket PC Addict quiddlet! That's a whole bunch of questions! Lets see if we can't punch through each of them one by one:
You wouldn't find WiFi settings where you said they were you'd actually find them in the CommManager and then Settings>WiFi Settings...
Check to see if you are getting an IP address! Also, make sure you are aware of any wireless security settings from your router.
Are you sure that Cingular GPRS isn't already set up? It should be by default. Try going to Start>Settings>Connections Tab>Connections>Manage Existing Connections and see how many connections you see there.
If you delete all the connections under there the only way that your Cingular 8125 will connect to the internet is through WiFi and when you are connected to your computer via USB. If you use WiFi you should make sure that you aren't already connected to MediaNet.
I believe that AgileMessenger is free to use but there is debate over that. Do a search for AgileMessenger and see what comes up.
Hope this helps, let us know if you have any other questions.
with agilemessenger, and you don't have unlimited texting, they say it could charge up to 10 cents per message.
He speaks the truth.. I called cingular about this issue and two people told me that if you are connected through the GPRS connection you will be charged 10cents for ever msg sent or recived. Unless of course you have some kind of text msg package... or.. if you are using the wifi connection then you don't get charged or deducted from your package..
Honestly, that's messed up. I mean GPRS should be the same connection to the internet as WiFi would be... how could they tack on text messaging charges like that just because we are using GPRS? Unbelievable.
I got you! go to your comm manager, disable data transfer.. that's if you want to make sure you want to use Wifi for agile messenger.. that way you know you are connected to wifi and not gprs, so you kno your wifi is working! then if you want to use your gprs (medianet) just disable wifi and enable data transfer or run agile messenger!
I'm new here. I just purchased the 8125 yesterday and I did not purchase the package for the internet with it. I intended to use it only with WiFi, however, everytime I enter an url in IE it attempts to connect to GPRS even though I'm connected to my Wifi. I followed the instruction to go to Start>Settings>Connections Tab>Connections>Manage Existing Connections but once I get to "Connections" I don't see "manage existing connections" there. I also tried the suggestion of goin to comm manager and disabling data transfer, Only i can't figure that out either. I opened comm manager but I'm lost from there.
Also I am assuming that connecting to the internet through WiFi is at no additional charge. Is that correct?
Thanks for any help you can provide. From what I've seen so far this is a great site and has come in useful already, and I've only had the phone for a day. Lokking forward to exploring some more.
You might not see Manage Existing Connections because the connection is already not there. Also when you go into Comm Manager how many icons do you see, if you recently updated your 8125 you should have 7 icons. The icon just below the WiFi icon is the one that disables GPRS. If it is greyed out, it might be because you of the same reason above, you don't have a GPRS setting set.
Connecting via WiFi is at no additional charge from Cingular, however you might get charged by the WiFi provider (you'd get to the provider's webpage first and you'd be notified before you get charged).
Thanks so much for the help. I think I have it all worked out now. I spent quite a while reading through previous threads. Thanks for all of the help this forum has provided me so far. Forums like this make getting a new unfamiliar product a much more enjoyable experience. The manufacturers and distributors never give you all of the information you need and often provide false or misleading help. It's great to have people like the ones hear who don't mind helpingout.

I just got a 2nd 8125 (the other one for the wifey), and my wifi is not working correctly. The other phone works and the settings are the same (I think).
When I try to access the internet, it tried to connect to "My ISP CSD".
Where am I going wrong here? Please help.
edit: I was able to get an ISP so I think my wifi is connected.

You might want to try to Enable your WIFI first before opening your browser and look for available network in the area, if it find one, it will alert you if you want to connect to this wireless connection, now you have the option to connect, if you do then you can start surfing the web...

I don't know what I've done wrong...or why I can't understand how to fix it...thick-headed I guess....I've gotten rid of media net...I have a wireless router at home...the phone sees it, but won't connect to it...it sees other wireless networks when I am out and about and does not let me connect to any of them either...I've read to the threads on here...and still, no go...and the manual is no help...any assistance is appreciated....
so...what do u see when u click start, settings, connections tab, network cards? do u see your wireless network there? if so, highlight it and right click (touch and hold) it. You should see an option that says connect.
do u see more than one network in your list? try removing the network settings of the ones you don't use by right clicking and then clicking "remove settings". that should reduce the additional connection attempts your phone will try to make if the wifi signals you are receiving are weak. the status of the network you are trying to connect should change from connecting to connected. also, notice how high/low the wifi signal is of the connection you are trying to connect thru. the signal strength should be indicated to the right of the networks name and the more bars u have, the better the strength.
I am so glad that I found this forum. I feel like I am so close to getting this figured out. This thread is exactly the topic I need help with!

Mine says "linksys_SES_36242" with excellent signal strength indicated and then "connecting". It seems that, although the 8125 has detected the network, somehow I am not actually "connected". This is also illustrated by the fact that when I go to Settings|Connections|Wireless LAN|Advanced that the status shows "Connecting to network . . ." and the IP address is 0.0.0.0. When I click "Renew IP" it still will not connect. I have a MAC address populated and on the "Main" tab, SSID is populateed with the linksys info above, Mode is "Infrastructure" (I didn't put this in), BSSID is 00-16-B6-32-83-ED (don't know where this came from), Tx Rate is "Auto" and Channel is 6 (again, neither of which I put in).
BTW, my indicator lights at the top of the phone are blinking green which I understand means that the phone has detected (is connected?) to a wi fi network.
When I try to connect to a web page using Internet explorer it tries to dial a number starting with a 415 area code then says that there is no modem at the above number (the 415 phone number). I deleted the connection (I thought) that was trying to dial this number but I can't seem to get the phone to stop trying to dial this number when trying to pull up a web page.

I only have one network listed (the wifi) and the signal strength is great.
Thanks so much for any help you can offer - I am so close it seems which makes is kinda frustrating!
Thought I would pop back here to try to figure this out....still no connecting.....
when I try to connect via ie, i get the message:
cannot connect with current connection setting. To change your connection tap settings.
Once tapped, I get:
My work network.
Add a new modem connection.
Edit my VPN server.
Set up my proxy server.
Manage existing connections.
When I click on manage existing connections, I get my work connection....I do have a VPN thing in it (I was trying just about everything)...and it won't let me remove it.
When I go to network cards, and go to Configure wireless networks, it shows
linksys Available
when I try to connect, it says connecting for a while and then reverts back to Available. I was able to delete it, and when it was detected again, it said :
linksys [unsecured] network connects me to
* the internet (or work via a VPN)
work
What am I doing wrong and why can't I get this thing to work right...?..
You can disregard my previous post......my daughter came over and reconfigured my wireless router....now everything works fine.....and I can't say how much I love my 8125....now that the wireless is working, it is everything I could hope for in a cell.....
I'm also having problems with my wifi connection with my 8125. The phone recognizes my router and I'm able to put in my passphrase without any problem. After that, I can't connect. If everything is left to automatic settings, I can not get an IP address. If I manually assign my IP address, it will not go any further. I deleted the MediaNET setting. I unchecked the proxy setting. I used Hitchhiker to see if it would create the right settings for me. I can't seem to connect. I read that it can't connect through WPA encryption, but there is a setting on this device for such security. My router is set for both WPA and WPA2 with TKIP and AES encryption. I know that the WPA + TKIP is working since my Win98SE desktop can only function at that security level. What am I doing wrong?
I had to make sure where it has the choice to select Open or Shared (can't remember exactly where it was...now, of course, can't find it)....the one I chose had to match the router selection. I had it open and couldn't connect, but once I set it to shared...it worked fine....
I know these are old posts. But since I just got my 8125. I needed help with getting my WiFi going. I had been trying to get this problem solved for the past 4 months. I was able to get connected to the network, but unable to browse the web or get email.
