Howdy All! My name is Jeff but you can call me BASS. I just joined the forums and this is my first post. I know how forums work and know that the answer I'm looking for is probably in a thread already but I'm lazy. So for now just ignore my noob antics and would appreciate the help. Here it goes..
I have the Cingular 8125 and I opted out on getting the unlimited connectivity plan. So right now I can't surf the web. Now since it has WiFi capability, can i just pull up a signal and get on the net without a plan? I asked Cingular and they said NO. Is that true? If not, could someone please explain to me how it can be done......actually, explain it to me like I'm a 2 year old.....stop laughing! I mean step by step on how to do it cause I'm somewhat computer illiterate.
I really like this phone so far and would love to unlock the full potential of the phone but I'm clueless. If you all can just bombard me with info, tricks or things that I can do I would appreciate it. Or even just pop the links to other threads on the forums that can help me out.
PS: I would LOVE to get Bejeweled 2 on it also and before I purchase it I was curious to know if there is another way to get it?
Welcome to Pocket PC Addict BASS! We're glad to have you here! To answer your question about WiFi, Cingular is incorrect. You are more than welcome to use your WiFi without being charged by Cingular. However, just make sure that the access point that you are connected to is free! All you need to do is go into the CommManager enable your WiFi connection and then go to a wireless hotspot (access point). If you are in range your Cingular 8125 will let you know of this and allow you to connect (you'll want to have it connect to the internet). That should be it (unless you need to put in a network key).
If you don't think that you will ever use Cingular MediaNet you can delete that default connection (so that you don't accidently connect and get charged by them) by going to Start>Settings>Connections Tab>Connections and then Manage Existing Connections. Tap and hold on the Cingular connection you see and hit delete. If you ever want to put those settings on again you can visit this thread here.
Welcome, BASS !
I've got the T-Mobile version of your phone, the MDA, and the WiFi is really easy for free connections... so if it doesn't connect directly, you can be sure there is some security device installed. to test your WiFi connection, you can go into a Starbucks and try to connect to their TMobile WiFi service... your browser should open to a page where you are asked to log into TMobile's WiFi program...
if this works, then you can be sure you can access any free hotspot you can find (public libraries, for example).
You guys ROCK! Thanks for the help. I got home and have Wifi here and just tried it and it worked. So hopefully I can use it and not get charged. I guess we'll have to see.
Also, how relyable are he downloads from the download section? I'm concerned that i go to install something and it wacks out the phone.
All the downloads in the downloads section are virus free and most should work for Windows Mobile 5.0. If it doesn't, just uninstall it! But please download at your own risk! No one has had problems so far.

I went to do that and the only options that were on the list there were :
Autopic (which was chosen)
MY ISP CSD (which was not chosen and had some phone number there)
MY ISP GPRS (not chosen also)
I don't see anything that says Cingular, unless one of those were it. When i got the phone I never actually set up anything regarding internet connection so it may not be there. Again, unless one of those were it.
Ok I may be about to be concerned here now. So first off I called cingular today to see if by any chance i was actually connecting to their service for internet options and she said as of right now there info has not refreshed upto date but she doesn't see any connecting going on so I was like...SWEET! So then I turn OFF the WiFi option and try connecting and I can. So I start to wonder...how is it connecting to the internet? So I do as you say Tim and delete all the options that I had mentioned in the earlier post as well as keeping the WiFi off . It still connect but now it says~> connecting to: Cingular GPRS (GPRS)
And i can acess the web with the WiFi off still. I'm scared! So now i have those things deleted and it saying what it says now. What did or didn't I do?
There were times when I was at home where it would locate any available wirless connections and list them and let me choose. Here at work I'm sure we have wireless but it doesn't really list them. So am I NOW using the Cingular connection or do I have to delete something else? I have to wait 24-48 hours before I can call Cingular again to check to see if I AM using there system and getting charged for it. But for now I'm not sure.
See...you guys said that if I had any more questions...to go ahead and ask.....now look what you got urself into. Told you I was clueless. But the phone is still working, so i didn't do anything bad yet.....YET!
you should have had a option that said media net, at any point when you connect to GPRS, you will be charged, and if you don't have the plan, for one picture its possible to get charged up to 5 dollars.

GRRR..... so how do I eliminate that so the phone just attempts to use the WiFi option only?
well i made my own setting called "home" and only checked this connects to the internet, and so far it has never tried to connect VIA gprs, But i also deleted media net seting all together, and it seems that you don't have that seting, so what i would do is remove all the factory setting and make your own. And if it doesn't allow you to remove those setting, try unchecking gprs.
hey tim i also have a problem, i recently update my rom cuz i finally got my SD card, and i had to do a soft reset. Now today one of my friends sent me a movie, and my phone connected to GPRS, before it asked me i had no internet connection and i had to make a connection VIA wifi, to download the movie, but now it just connected, and i have removed medianet, so whats going on?
hmm... well when you do a ROM update it updates everything to the defaults (i.e. it puts MediaNet back on). Have you checked to see if it is still deleted? And if so, let me know.
hmmm... I wonder what it still is connecting to? So you see the icon in the tray that indicates this the GPRS connection? Are you sure that your phone isn't connected to your PC either? For future reference if your PC is connected to the internet and your Pocket PC is connected to your PC, then your Pocket PC will get internet as well!
Guys, just in case... since you seem to have a GPRS connection which didn't exist before... :-?
after the ROM update I noticed I have a "T-Zones" button, which I didn't have before, and which doesn't do anything right now... I haven't called T-Mobile yet about this, but maybe the ROM update includes a T-Zones connection that we didn't have before, which uses GPRS but at a much lower cost,,, I hope so!
is it MANDATORY to purchase a data plan? im thinkin about cancelling my 19.99 data plan considering i only use the net when wifi is available...do u think cingular would let me cancel?
No you don't need the plan but MAKE SURE you find a way to get rid of the GRP or GSR or whatever it is that makes u connect to the wireless provider internet. I thought I deleted it and when I logged on it still connected and it charged me a bunch of money. If it asks you to connect to it, cancel! I usually turn on the wifi setting then go into the wifi settings and see if it picks up a usuable signal. As long as it sees that signal you can use it without getting charged. i REALLY would like to find away to completely remove the wirless connection but so far i'm clueless...so I just have to be carefull when Iuse it for now.
If anyone knows 100% for sure how to delete it then please let me know. And also please explain it like i'm a 5 year old...easier that way.

i just got my phone last friday and i've prolly logged into the "Cingular GPS" one time....but i cancelled it asap to make sure they werent gonna charge me anything. I've used this thread to remove the MediaNet settings....but i've noticed that whenever i try to connect to the web WITHOUT wifi, it'll try to get connect to Cingular GPS....and thats when i hit that mighty "Cancel" button. Im with u, BASStrance...theres gotta be a way to COMPLETELY delete it from off of the phone.
edit: i went ahead and called cingular and had them remove the data package from my plan. the only package i have outside of my phone plan is the 3000 txt message package for 19.99.

Yeah I never even had the data plan from the getgo....I've read through some of the opther threads regarding it and didn't find the info I needed to delete the gps. Unless I missed something. I guess i'll just have to be careful for now.
i've figured it out...and as it turns out BigZam was right, its just that he didnt go into deeper detail..but its not his fault. This is what u need to do to make it so that your phone doesnt try to connect to Cingular GPRS when Wifi is turned OFF and you've already went to Start>Settings>Connections Tab>Connections and then Manage Existing Connections and delete the connection.
From the Connections Menu, click on the Advanced Tab, which should take you to the Network Management Screen. From there you should see 3 options: MediaNet, My ISP, My Work Network. Click MediaNet, then click Edit. Go to the General Tab, click Delete Settings and bam, its gone. No more "accidently" connecting to Cingular GPRS when Wifi is NOT turned on and you thought u deleted the connections from the "Manage Connections" list.
Test it by turning wifi off, then connecting. U should get get a message that says you cant connect.
Bad news....did that a while ago...still connects tho. No, their help and directions was on the money...it just still connect for some reason. When i try to go back to that area to check it, I don't even have a MANAGAE EXSISTING CONNECTIONS option anymore to click. I have
MY ISP: ADD A NEW MODEM...
and
MY WORK NETWORK:
ADD A NEW MODEM....
ADD A NEW VPN SERVER...
SET UP MY PROXY SEVER
ok. so what do u see when u go into the Connections menu, then we go to the advanced tab? u should see a button that says "select network". medianet should be in the list of networks, along with "my isp" and "my work network". do u see medianet?
Hi, all...
My WiFi connected correctly after going into settings... connections tab... connections... advanced tab, and then selecting "My Work Network" (which is nonexistent) as the default service to use when I choose a program that requires Internet...
As a TMobile user, I have 2 TMobile services to choose from, so I simply left them out (I don't seem to have a way to delete them...)

Yes i do. And if i go to EDIT in the MEDIANET option it has:
AUTO PICK (marked already)
CSD CINGULAR (with a phone number there)
CINGULAR GPRS
Ok I deleted those options and now it doesn't connect to GPRS. SWEEEEEEET!!!!!!!!!
YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
EYERONE.....YOU ROCK ON DAYS THAT END IN Y!!!!!!!!
