Hi all, I'm new. I have an 8125 Cingular Pocket PC, and I love it to death because it's so easy to use after having had an HP 1910 iPaq for a few years now, but I have absolutely no desire to ever use the GPRS/paid connection service at all. I can’t seem to manage to use the WiFi connection without GPRS popping up and saying it’s going to connect. I’ve tried everything in the other threads and I’ve run into nothing but dead ends or new problems.
For one, I’m pretty dumb about how to find and connect to a WiFi network at all. I can’t find where to delete MediaNet at all. I don’t know how to connect to my wireless router at home (2Wire). I tried to install WiFiFoFum, but I don’t have room for .NET crap on the device, so how did any of you manage to install it? I installed MiniStumbler and it doesn’t detect WiFi networks that I KNOW are here at work, it detects nothing at all.
I’m totally stumped, but I was thinking to avoid ever accidentally using the GPRS/MediaNet stuff, I could just delete the files named “GPRSAuthentication” from the Windows folder on my device. Can I manually remove the ability to ever accidentally connect to the paid network?
Is there a program that doesn’t require .NET framework junk that would help me with all of this?
Welcome to Pocket PC Addict brandice! I'm glad that you are in love with your new Cingular 8125! In all honesty you don't need to have the extra programs to get your WiFi running, but first things first, let's get that MediaNet connection off of your Pocket PC!
You should see the MediaNet GPRS setting here. Tap and hold until you see a "right click" menu. From there you should be able to delete it.
I'd recommend removing all WiFi utilities that you have installed on your own. Then perform a soft reset. See if any qireless networks are detected and connect. If you still need help, let us know the details of your issue!
Well, I uninstalled the MiniStumbler and sort of managed to delete the GPRS connection, and now I'm able to connect at home, but when I was at Panera Bread earlier, I sat and tried for almost an hour and couldn't connect... The device detected it and asked me if I wanted to connect and all that, but then when I hit connect, it tried all the wifi points in the vicinity and eventually they all went from available to not available (even though I KNEW at least the Panera wifi was available and free, because I was sitting under the sign).
Any advice? Do I need to be doing something to sign in to these connections or set them up somehow? What's the deal?

Welcome to our forums...
Just a comment about "free and available" WiFi: sometimes it's down... (hey, in airports even paid connections are sometimes down)
so let's consider this: you can connect at home, meaning that WiFi is working (do you have security at home?)
- your 8125 is also seeing other WiFi networks... good...
- you can't connect to other WiFi networks...... not good...
Logically, it seems you might have put a security filter on all of your WiFi connections, which blocks your entry into these "public" WiFi services...
Well, good luck..... I would check the settings on your WiFi connection to Panera Bread, and see if it was using WEP or another security measure.
Let us know if it works!..................... Manny
Well, I figured out the work wifi has a static IP situation that prevents my 8125 from just automatically connecting, which will be fixed tomorrow when they assign one to me. Haven't had a chance to get back to Panera and try that again though. Maybe this afternoon!
Well, I tried again last night at Panera and it said "Unable to obtain a server-assigned IP address. Try again later or enter an IP address in Network Settings."
What does this mean and how can I connect to Panera? I saw several other people connected, and I can detect the available network, as well as many others... what am I doing wrong???

The message you get about ""Unable to obtain a server-assigned IP address. " means that you have to follow Tim's advice about setting your WiFi to dynamic DHCP, where it gets the IP address from the server...
Just remember that if you do this, you might not be able to reconnect at work... unless you know how to set up a second connection profile on your PPC.
I don't think that's the problem, because it automatically connects at Arabica and at home without any trouble at all... do I have dynamic DHCP set up if those locations are working?
Also, how do I go about changing to dynamic DHCP or checking to make sure it's set up that way?
