Smile cannot connect to home network with 128bit wep

New HP ipaq rx1950 with 2003 os version 5.1 pocketpc software. The pda registers my home network (belkin54g). It connects wirelessly and says 'Available' However we have a 128 bit WEP network key that requires 26 digits entering. So we select authentication = WEP and data encryption WEP and enter the 26 digit key. We know the key is correct because it works on other wireless notebooks. The connection with the PDA fails. We do a self test and the error states that 'your WI-FI is not associated with an access point. Check your wi fi settings.'When I look at the network key page again, I see that it has only 13 asterisks entered. Does that mean it has deleted the rest of the key? will it only accept up to 13 digits?

I followed your post here EASILY Encrypt Your WiFi Connection for PPC and confirmed my stages were correct, especially entering the key.

Can someone please help

TIA Richard

Hi, Carnuke! Just a comment: the input pads and keys are so small, and the WEP is actually casesensitive... so I had to reinput the key about 8 times!!!
My suggestion is try connecting w/o the WEP... that will verify that everything else is AOK... then go for a simpler encryption (maybe the 26 keys are too much for your processor?) ... that can be a problem with older, slower, desktops, so why not with our PPCs ?

Good luck!

Manny

does your router support wireless B? Normally pocket pc only connect via wireless B and not G. I had the same problem before, I thought there was something wrong with my pda.

I just checked HP ipaq rx1950 only support wireless B..

Wireless B? I have no idea. The router is a belkin wireless modem with built in 802.11g wireless router F5D7630-4A I have seen no reference to wireless B unless the '...11G' is the clue. I have another ibm notebook that runs wirelessly, it it works just fine. I have not turned the security WEP off yet, but I ultimately need this to running. Thanks for your comments.

Great observation K3KFY !
Carnuke: Just to keep us on our toes, there are 3 types of WiFi in general use: 802.11a, 802.11b, and 802.11g, and as Wikipedia puts it:
"The 802.11 family currently includes six over-the-air modulation techniques that all use the same protocol. The most popular (and prolific) techniques are those defined by the b, a, and g amendments to the original standard; security was originally included and was later enhanced via the 802.11i amendment. "
Theoretically, 802.11g equipment should work with 802.11b equipment, but maybe your router is not flexible enough... I would check your specifications, just in case if you can't connect once you disable security.

Good luck, then!.............. Manny

carnuke:

Your router should be able to handle both B and G devices as long as it is set up for both B and G modes or "mixed mode." If it set to G only that might be the problem. Also, as much as I hate to say this, you should try to bring down the encryption to 64-bit, this will allow you to enter in 10 alphanumeric characters and should work like a charm. I haven't used an iPAQ rx1950's WiFi with WEP setup before so I can't tell you if it supports 128-bit or not. Try this and if it doesn't work, let us know.

Thnaks for your comments so far. I called the HP help line on this thye said they had not come across this problem before. Still waiting a resolution from them. I would have thought they should have advised me to lower encryption rate if that was the case, but hey, seriously, I doubt they know the products as well as you guys!

@ Manny, My router is set to Mixed (11b+11g)
@Tim, I started to set my router to 64bit encryption, but saw it generated 20 pairs of digits, where as 128-bit shows 13 pairs of digits. All this was so easy on my wirless notebook ... I just entered the key and it was on. Pocket PC is real pain to enter these digits. Its a shame there is no app to run on the pc that allows you to configure this remotely via active-sync

Ok, here is Hp helpline answer ...
Quote:
Thank you for contacting Hewlett-Packard's Commercial Solutions Center.

I did read your email and the exployer on that unit does not support 128 bit encryption. but the ipaq should let you enter more than 13 digits but only 13 will show up this I know for sure. You can search for a 3rd party browlser or check with microsoft web site for patches to enable 128 encryption on the ipaq.
So I guess I have to degrade my encryption to 64-bit. This is curious, because it produces 30 digits on my belkin router. Maybe there is something here I dont fully understand. Sorry to be so ignorant here, but how does 64-bit help me if I can only enter 13 digits?

Carnuke: can you substitute access control for encryption in order to maintain security in your LAN? That might work a little better, since you are having so many hassles with the WEP code...

Good luck!............. Manny

Thanks Manny for that idea ... However, I have finally managed to get a proper encrypted connection to the internet. Im somewhat embarrassed to admit, but the 40 digits I was referring to was my fault yep, I never saw the boxes with keys as 4 discreet lines keys, ie key

key 1 **********
key 2 **********
etc

the 128-bit encryption uses one key over 4 lines and that's what threw me !!. Ok, Im on now and thanks to your help here, Im learning a bit.

Hail, Oh Conqueror of the Mighty WiFi Conundrum!....

Yeah, Carnuke!!!
The facts always take priority over what we think!!!
a) To err is human... to learn is divine!

b) Remember I told you that I had to reintroduce the encryption key a number of times? Well, before that, setting up my laptop, I had to reintroduce it about 5 times until I realized that my router never showed the last letter of the encryption key unless I scrolled "right" to see it, and then I didn't see the first letter!

Take care!........... Manny
