I have a cingular 8125 and i want to know how to set up wifi on it. Where it indicates whether I'm using wifi or not, there is an E there. What does that mean and how do I connect via wifi. Also, I noticed that when I did connect via wifi, they require I connect through medianet. I'm afraid of get charged per kb. Does anyone know how to disable the medianet. Yes I realize these are all dumb questions that probably hundreds of people have already asked but I'm tired of searching through forums for this question. Anyone who can answer these questions I would greatly appreciate.

To answer your question the "E" icon on the top indicates that you are in an area where there is EDGE (or MediaNet service). If you see a G that means you are in an area that has GPRS service. GPRS is a bit slower than EDGE but it still is MediaNet. Most metropolitan areas have EDGE readily available.
You will not get charged by Cingular if you use WiFi instead of MediaNet, however not all WiFi hotspots are free, you may have to pay for some of them depending on where you are and what they have set up. If your Cingular 8125 still asks you to connect to MediaNet it might be because the WiFi hotspot that you are connected to does not have a stable Internet connection.
But if you know for a fact that you are using the internet via WiFi then just ignore that message.
Anytime you are connected to MediaNet and you are using the Internet (i.e. checking e-mail, browsing the web) then you will incur charges through Cingular.
A great program I like to use for "trolling" is called miniStumbler. Check it out here.
If that doesn't work, you can always try WiFiFoFum.
To disable MediaNet on your Cingular 8125, just go to Start>Settings>Connections Tab>Connections>Manage Existing Connections>the tap and hold the MediaNet connection and select delete. That should do the trick.

Just got my 8125, been trying to work this out thru the manual but no joy so far.
Trying to connect via Wifi at home but it doesn't seem to want to work..I can see that the cinnection gets established and I get an IP address assigne from my router, but when I try to use esplorere everything timesout,,
Went through try to associate my connection with the WiFi vs APN (GPPRS) but could n't see how to do it....

Welcome to Pocket PC Addict carriera! I'm sorry to hear that you are having trouble connecting to WiFi with your Cingular 8125. What you need to do is make sure that the proper network is selected. Go here and check/play with your settings:
You shouldn't have to create a new connection as it seems you are doing, WiFi is already a default connection. Let us know what you find and we can assist you further.
Check that I added the dns servers after checking what my wireless router had setup and it worked....would have thought it would have auto figured that out, I didn't have to do that with any of my PC's that use it...
under my "network cards" settings, it shows I am connected to my wireless router, and in my sdio wlan wireless adapter settings it shows that DHCP is working, and i have a 192.168.1.4 IP address. But under the connections/advanced->choose connections, wi-fi is not an option. All i see under "Select a modem" are bluetooth, cellular line, cell line (gprs), generic irda, and hayes compatible on COM1. so i guess my question is... the phone is connected to the wifi network... now how does it use it??
well once you turn on wifi, (the blue tower no longer has a X on it) and you can get a IP your connected. You should be able to open up Internet exp. and surf.

ok i foudn the problem. for some reason, under work network, proxy settings said "this network connects to the internet." turned that off, and now it works like a charm.
Well I can connect to my wifi connection I have in my home... But, my phone (cingular 8125) says that I need a certificate to positively identify me... Where do I go from here???
What is the exact prompt that you are getting? If it's asking you abour certificates, just go ahead with it and it should work fine. Let us know the details!

I'm thinking that either your Cingular 8125 or your router is running with IEEE 802.1X authentication enabled. I'd recommend disabling it in your router or Pocket PC if it is enable unless you actually have an authentication server setup (I doubt it).
Here's a quick check. If you can connect fine with your laptop and you know that IEEE 802.1X is not enabled, then you know that it is definetely your Cingular 8125. You can change those settings in the connection settings.

I was told when I bought my phone that "anywhere I reveived a signal I would be able to get on the internet with my phone and that I could also use my laptop and connect to the internet on it through my pocket pc 8125". So far I have not been able to figure out how to do this, perhaps its because the phones do not come with instructions, does anyone have any tips or advice? Thanks!
Thanks to all who have helped others master the use of WiFi on the 8125. I am about to purchase a 8125 but I'd rather not subscribe to Cingular Media service. It appears that I can use the phone via WiFi to access the I-net if I follow the instructions posted here re: setup. If I am wrong, please let me know. Currently I have an old Cingular data plan ($3.99/mo.) that allows me to access my e-mail etc. at a slow speed via Bluetooth through my notebook. The WiFi function should be a work-around the high cost data plans Cingular offers.
By the way, I use a Canary Hotspot finder when traveling that is great. Go to the Canary website and read about it if you are interested.
I just read somewhere where you can set up a wireless computer to your PPC through a internet Connection sharing (ICS) option. My friend does that for me when I'm in his dorm room sometimes. He like uses the ICS option and somehow my laptop gets a internet connection wirelessly through his lan connection on his laptop. I'm guessing there is some way to do a laptop-to-PPC connection in the same manner. Can anyone give me some light on this.???
victoria82: That's correct, as long as you have a plan with Cingular's MediaNet (if you don't they will charge you data overage). Your Cingular 8125 should be set up already to handle this. Try opening up Internet Explorer Mobile and entering in a URL (i.e. http://www.pocketpcaddict.com). Your device should automatically connect.
watkinsd: You're absolutely correct. The Cingular 8125 has built in WiFi so you can access the internet without having to use MediaNet. Just watch out that you aren't connecting with GPRS (MediaNet). Your best bet is to remove this connection altogether by going to Start>Settings>Connections Tab>Connections>Manage Existing Connections> and tap and hold down on the connection and deleting it. Make sure you really want to do this or you will have to get this information again if you want to connect to MediaNet.

ICS is one way to go, although I would recommend getting a router down the line since they are inexpensive nowadays and are much eaiser to setup. You can find a tutorial on ICS here. The Pocket PC will just need to connect directly to the laptop as it would any other access point.

If I use the delete function you note above, what is the reinstall process? Most likely I'll not want to do a reinstall but should I what do I do?

I want to thank you for posting Tim. I have been searching forums for two months for the reason my NetGear router would not work with my New Cingular 8125. YOU are the only person to suggest that a static IP might work...and it did!!!!
For those who may follow me...and for the record, mine works with the following settings:
- G and B enabled...not the Auto 108kb setting
- Wep 128 not PSK
- adding a static IP for the MAC address of the device
- Hardware Version V3H1 - Firmware Version V1.0.128_1.0.1 (latest) - plus disabling the proxy - I also called to tell Cingular to disable their services for the internet as i had no need to be charged.
Now I'm on to my next quest...I'm frugle (cheap) so now I need is a great set of links that are mobile freindly (news, fun sites) and a set of apps that are not loaded with spyware!
Better yet, any customization freebee sites for ringtones, themes.... Heck, send me a package, I'd really appreciate it!
Here is my situation... I have a dial up ISP at my house, but with a wireless router (stop laughing, easiest way to connect 2 computers, ha!), I have HS internet @ work, /w a wireless router that is always connected to the internet, and I am subscribing to Cingular's Edge or MediaNet.
Now is there a way to set my phone so it will use the wireless routers before it uses the Media net?
I'm showing I'm connected to my wireless HS internet router @ work right now, but can't pull anything up on my browser.
There is no way to prioritize the way your phone connects however I believe that it will choose WiFi first over GPRS. Your best bet is to make sure that you have the latest ROM update for your Cingular 8125 so that you can turn off your cell phone radio individually. That way you'll know for sure that you are connected via WiFi.
As far as trying to get internet working at work with your Cingular 8125 I'd make note of any wireless security and also I'd make sure that I'm recieving an IP address from the router.

I finally got my wifi working perfectly for IE access.
But I noticed that when accessing email my phone tries to use GPRS first....then I have to manually NOT CONNECT to GPRS....then it uses the existing wifi connection.
Short of deleting the MEDIANET
Short of turning my phone OFF...because i need it on.
i noticed also that even when i've disabled DATA CONNECTIONS...
that occassionally it will try to connec to GPRS
You may have some application that needs to connect to the internet for updates, some of this are weather program, RSS feeds, avantgo and other alike. you might want to check what application that you have that was set to connect to the internet automatically...

I just got a cingular 8125 and i'm new to this whole ppc thing. I've deleated the media net thing like yall said, and now i'm wondering if theres anything else i need to do to be postive i wont be charged by cingular for wireless internet service? Also is there any type of icon at the top of the screen that will tell me i'm using wifi? thanks a million
