hey everyone!! i can connect to my home connection using wifi, at least i think! how can i be absolutely sure that i am not using cingular's connection without deleting it? i want to be able to use it when im not at my home. i also would like to know what the exact settings are that the wifi and the media net is used under?? thanks!
Before I purchased my 8125 I was told that I could get my email via public WiFi. The sales people at a local Cingular kiosk now tell me that I need to have Cingular's $39/mo data set-up.
My phone recognizes the WiFi signal from my witeless router, but that is as far as I get. I want to be able to receive and send from any public WiFi hot spot without incurring any charges from Cingular.
I am assuming my situation is one that has been faced by many others and someone has written the procedure for accomplishing the above. If some has written instructions or can direct me to a source I will be deeply grateful. I really need a copy of 8125 WiFi for Dummies.
Thanks in advance for any assistance anyone can provide.
it is simple go to communication manager and tap the phone icon you will see that after that the icon will dimmer meaning it kind diappears
now turn on wifi and from now on all your internet communications will use the wifi network you are on.
don't worry it will work I and to speak with a south afrika guy that a cingular rep got online for me.
basically your phone goes dead and basically it becames a computer
you will not able to receive phone calls but what at hell you want to go on the internet and not get charged right?
at least when you are home
let me know if it works for you because it worked for me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I want to thank you for posting Tim. I have been searching forums for two months for the reason my NetGear router would not work with my New Cingular 8125. YOU are the only person to suggest that a static IP might work...and it did!!!!
For those who may follow me...and for the record, mine works with the following settings:
- G and B enabled...not the Auto 108kb setting
- Wep 128 not PSK
- adding a static IP for the MAC address of the device
- Hardware Version V3H1 - Firmware Version V1.0.128_1.0.1 (latest) - plus disabling the proxy - I also called to tell Cingular to disable their services for the internet as i had no need to be charged.
Now I'm on to my next quest...I'm frugle (cheap) so now I need is a great set of links that are mobile freindly (news, fun sites) and a set of apps that are not loaded with spyware!
Better yet, any customization freebee sites for ringtones, themes.... Heck, send me a package, I'd really appreciate it!
Thanks, Trademan. I spent a couple of hours banging my head until I took your suggestion, and Viola! I hadn't updated my firmware in years.
As a sidenote, I was having difficulty connecting to a friend's 802.11g two rooms down the hall, until I discovered the problem went away when I got closer to the wifi unit. Either poor reception or poor broadcast could be blamed, not sure which yet, but a good idea to get close until u know.
I've read through this forum topic twice trying to gleem some information, but no one has quite hit on my problem. My 8125 sees available WiFi networks (home, Starbucks, peer-to-peer, etc) but refuses to connect to any of them. When I pull up the "Network Cards" menu and see the available networks and try to connect to one it will say "Connecting..." then go right back to "Available."
I've killed the security on my router, updated the firmware (Lynksys WRT54G) and done every thing but a hard reset to my 8125. If ANYONE has any ideas on how to fix this, please enlighten me!!! I've pulled my remaining hair out trying to figure it out. Cingular's support site doesn't say didly about WiFi support (refers you to a 1-800 #) and I can't find any good info on the net.
Jim, I had a similar problem with the MDA, a "brother" of the 8125, and the only suggestion I have is that you totally uninstall the WiFi setup for your home, and try again with all security off. I had lots of trouble with the security options, and found that if I blew it the first time, it wouldn't connect correctly, so I simply erased all the WiFi connections, and tried, tried again, until it worked. Then I added the security... a total pain, but it works...
I just found and installed "Phone Profiler" and it works like a charm.
It basically does in one tap what italzen recommended.
I set up 2 profiles.
First one is phone and it enables the phone and disables the wireless. I use this as default and allows me to make calls and if I need to, use GPRS for internet/mail access while on the road.
Second profile is wireless. I set that to disable the phone and enable wireless. This turns off the phone/gprs connection and turns on the wifi to use at home/office. I can't make or receive calls, but I don't want that to happen if I am working on something online anyways.
It also allows you to set up other profiles that will auto launch programs if you need to.
ok, i know this is gunna sound like a really noob question.
my buddy's got a 8125, and wants to get his wifi goin for when he's over here (no wifi at his house). im not really a noob when it comes to computers or my router or anything, i have a wifi network setup and workin on a couple of my computers (not my personal one, dont want the instability or lag associated with them as i game alot ). however i am a bit noob to his phone, first off i hate the ui or whatever u want to call it, or maybe im missing something,, but is there an option im missing to scan for wifi networks? and also, i use a MAC filter on my router, but i dont see that the phone has a MAC address (again im a bit of a noob to this phone so maybe im jsut blind), but anyways what is prety much the most straight forward way to search for or even set up the wifi? his phone is not seeing any wifi connections (but i dont really know how to scan for them) and i know a couple neighbors of mine have one, so atleast one should show up if not more. oh and yes i turn my MAC filter off when trying to get his phone to connect. thanks for the help
ok meatwad , nice name btw, Go to the little coconut looking thing at the bottom of the today screen. It will bring up icons for wifi, GPRS, the phone, sound and all that. Click on the Wifi one (that's the one with a tower with the waves coming out of it.)
It will say something and a notification will pop up. Click it and click connect. Say internet. It will ask you for a key. On the bottom of your DSL Modem there is a number in parenthesis. Put that in there. It should be 10 numbers long... mine was. But I think there are only 3 long numbers there.. so it will be easy.
Whenever you see Connecting to GPRS CLICK CANCEL taht will charge you.
...but anyways what is prety much the most straight forward way to search for or even set up the wifi? his phone is not seeing any wifi connections (but i dont really know how to scan for them) and i know a couple neighbors of mine have one, so atleast one should show up if not more. ..

WM5 (windows mobile 5) Does scan for wifi all the time if WiFi is enabled (sort-of), so as far as I know you can't just start and stop a scan. If your or you buddy's device is not seeing an available network(s) that you know are there, select network card to bring up a list of available wifi netowrk... this is how:
1) go to Comm Manager , tap the wifi button to turn on wifi
(for HTC devices (8128,8525,MDA,...) it the button on the side with a Target symbol with waves comming of it)
2) Tap Settings (right soft key) , select Wireless Lan (wifi)
3) Tap Menu (left soft key) , select Network Cards
and poof ... you'll see all the wifi connections that you aren't seeing
This list will refresh every 7-10 sec (this is what i mean by auto scanning)
4) From the list, Tap & Hold on the desired connection then, tap Connect
5) Cross your fingers
I just got a cingular 8125 and i'm new to this whole ppc thing. I've deleated the media net thing like yall said, and now i'm wondering if theres anything else i need to do to be postive i wont be charged by cingular for wireless internet service? Also is there any type of icon at the top of the screen that will tell me i'm using wifi? thanks a million
You might want to check your your connections its under settings, check if you have a configured gprs connection, you can delete this so that everytime your device needs an internet connection it won't be able to do so.
Now for your wifi question, the answer is yes an icon will appear in the top of the screen if you are connected to an access point. You will also see a bubble notification everytime your device see any available wireless connections...

This question has been answered if different ways but I though I add few things.
How do I keep from beign charged for connecting to internet when attempting to connect to wifi?
this is agood question cuz if you're already connected to your wifi and while surfing you loose you connection the device is designed to connect to what ever it can and will auto switch to GPRS/EDGE/3G and then you start to be charged.
There are several ways to prevent this from happening:
a) call to the provider let them no you do not want you device getting a data connection and do what ever they need to do to make it happen.
If you a cingular customer, talk to Tech support (Cingular ANS dept) and tell them to remove all your APN's (isp.cingular & pdpwap) off you profile. They do this all the time in reverce to fix data connection issues with ppl profiles.
b) delete/modify you connection settings. Or better yet, make a new one and set it as the default connection setting. That way in the event you have to use the provider's connection you'll all ways have it and don't have to call to have them to walk you through setting it all back up which can take some time to do.
this all you need to do the set up a new one and make it you default internet connection setting.
2) Tap Select Networks button (in the connections screen)
3) Tap New button (in the network managment screen)
4) Enter a name for the connection (like WiFi)
5) Tap Proxy Settings tab , put a check in " This network connects to the Internet" setting
6) Tap OK at top right of screen
7) Now just select your new connection from the drop down menu under the area for "Programs that automatically connect to the Internet should connect using: "
Hello, i´m form argentina.
I have a cingular 8125, and i cant turn on wi fi.
when i clik on the wi fi button, the machin think for a few second and then the wi fi ints off againg.
I've had the 8125 for 7-8 months now and im just now trying to 'trick' it out lol. about the wi-fi...ive deleted GPRS...but in the wi-fi settings, is there anything info i need to put in so that it'll work??? im new to this whole thing.
another thing, i turned on wifi on my phone and i see a antenna-looking thing where the E used to be. is that right?
I am new here though I have read all the threads I managed to solve some of my problems but I still need some help.
I have this phone for almost a year but I never use it to surf the net or download any data. Two days ago I was tempted to buy some ringtones from the att cite but when I received the tx message I was not able to download. I called the CS and she told me with my phone I will not be able to go to the internet until I pay $39.00 more for that service. I tried to find the solution on line and stumble this site and I was able to download using mediaNet. From the forum I managed to delete the mediaNet after that to avoid future charges.
My question is now when I try to use WiFi from available unsecured networks I get the signal I connect but I can’t open the page. Sometimes it says this page cannot open and sometimes it says I cannot access the Internet using this network or something like that. My question is 1. How do I set up my WiFi so I can be able to surf on those hot spot areas? I know is connected but I cannot go to the Internet at all. 2. How can I set to use at home too. I have a westell 6100 Modem/router…Is this a modem/router as I read online or it is just a modem? I think I need to buy the real router right? But if one can help me with the setting if this is just a modem I will go and get a router tomorrow.
I 've tried to follow this information but I didn't understand where I should set this from.

Hi,
I have a cingular 8125, and am trying to connect to wifi. I get connected, but i cant use IE. I try to go to a page, but it says, page cannot be displayed or whatever. I tried to uncheck the proxy thing, but it just goes checked automatically, after i close it, and then open it again. ANY SOLUTIONS????
THANKS!
Check that I added the dns servers after checking what my wireless router had setup and it worked....would have thought it would have auto figured that out, I didn't have to do that with any of my PC's that use it...
Oh well, it works.
later,
Al
I just got this from my brother (I am new at using this) and I am trying to figure out how to get the Wifi setup.
Quick question. Which DNS entry did you use? Are you pointing it to the router? or use the one from the internet that the router used?
